Peterborough County International
Plowing Match & Rural Expo 2006

Caroline Elder

It is hard to believe that the five day event that took years and months of planning by over 55 committees, not counting the sub-committees, has come and gone.

I was proud to be able to represent North Kawartha on the County Exhibit Committee and the County Entertainment Sub-Committee; it was a wonderful opportunity to work with representatives and council from every township in the county and the city of Peterborough.  As with most events, it wouldn’t be possible without volunteers! Even our own Reeve and Deputy Reeve joined in for set-up and helped out through the event. I know we had some great representation from our area and apparently a couple of residents that are good with a plow! Of course the IPM is about much more than plowing; it is about rural life, our history and our future, it is about our beautiful surroundings, hard work and reminding everyone about the important role that farms play in all of our lives.  Many wore bright yellow T-shirts with the message “Farms Feed Cities”. Perhaps you were one of the estimated 100,000 visitors, that took in all of the sights and sounds of the 100 acres of “tented city” on the beautiful Glen Isle Farm in Keene, if not here are few pictures, and for all of the details from the event you can visit www.PeterboroughIPM.ca.

(Editors Note:  Caroline Elder deserves a big thank you for all the hard work she did with the planning committee of this event, I for one know she put a few kms on her mobile traveling back and forth for the meetings.  Thanks for all your hard work and to all of the other volunteers we thank you.)

Important Event, January 26-28, 2007
Sandy Zimmerman

In 2006, I attended The Travelling World Community Film Festival in Peterborough with some anxiety.  Was I going to be bombarded with information I couldn’t understand --- or worse yet, exposure to all sorts of violence?  Would I come away feeling totally helpless to make any significant difference?

Let me describe the festival last year.  It offered films from Friday to Sunday, all day and into early evening.  (We managed to see enough during the day.)  With three sites, we often had a difficult choice to make. Each film was described on quidnovis.net and in the festival’s program guide.  Topics included the environment, alternative energy, world issues, politics, peace efforts and more.  Approaches in the films ranged widely from the very intimate and personal to one which captured a world conference. Some were humorous (Rick Mercer), others extremely moving (e.g. Beyond Treason, The End of Suburbia). Quality was excellent. Each one left me with the impression that some important ideas had been shared. I came away feeling that I was a player in this world – and that it was urgent that I do my part to improve it.  Yes, I am really looking forward to this year’s offerings.  A weekend’s pass is $25. Single films -  $5.00 at the door.
