Recently a resident of Apsley was arrested and charged with an offense that is quite serious. The nature of the offense is not pertinent to this commentary.
What is pertinent is the reaction of a few people in the town. For reasons known only to themselves some self-appointed pinheads of propriety have determined to convict this person before there is a hearing, and not only that, to tar the man's sister with the same stupid brush.
In the bible is a statement to the effect that that the sins of the father do not visit upon the sons and daughters. It is the same here; any alleged sin of the brother does not make the sister guilty of anything and does not entitle any person to condemn her or cause her pain.
Here we have a mature, sensible, responsible woman, who contributes to the community through the Legion and her work with children, having her character assaulted and her volunteer work diminished by ignorant people with too much time on their hands and too few cells between their ears
If your brother takes short-cuts on his income tax, are you a 'tax cheat' too? If your father once ran a bootleg operation, are you forever to be condemned as a rum-runner? Of course not; to believe otherwise is idiotic.
How, when a charge has yet to be proven in Court, can any community harbor people who believe that the sister and any other relative is equally guilty and that she should be prevented from her volunteer work teaching arts and crafts to children? The people who have called this woman up to chastise her and label her guilty; the people who want to remove their children from her teaching classes are on the one hand, ignoring the concept of innocence until proven otherwise, the concept that the sins of a brother do not visit upon the sister and they also prove that Apsley is a village with idiots to share with small towns without their own.
You now who you are and you should be ashamed and should remember the eighth commandment about False Witness. As for the victim of this scurrilous behavior, the town and its denizens owe you a deep apology.
