YOUR HEALTH...
YOUR COMMUNITY! by Cal Taillefer
Once again, our 5k Walk/Run was a huge success raising over $2,600 for the Medical Centre and we thank Neil and Peter and all of the others for organizing this. Also, a special thanks to The Running Room for being the major sponsor. A new addition was a pancake/muffin breakfast which raised an additional $230, with thanks to Pepsi QTG for being the food sponsor. If you haven't yet dropped into the Medical Centre, please do and notice the beautiful curtains which were generously made by Robin Mitzuk. In addition to the many hours of designing and sewing, she also provided the necessary hardware and the installation. She then went on to provide slip covers for Dr. Rayes' sofa. A job well done by another tireless community volunteer! In future articles, we plan to print all those who will be listed on the Donor Wall, so if you have not yet contributed and would like to be there, please do so as soon as possible. Many thanks for your support.

As you can see by the Community Care building the village did not make it through the storm unscathed. We are fortunate that no one was in the building at the time. I’m armed with more than complete steel,- The justice of my quarrel Christopher Marlowe (Lust’s Dominion)

Fun in the
Sun by Pastor John Trotter The summer is on its way out, but it is a great time of the year. A time when families get to get away on vacation or just stay home and sit in the sun. I just got back from Darien Lake for Kingdom Bound. We had a great time at the park, going on the rides, to the concerts and just hanging out. While I was there, I could not help but think about a young person who had been talking to me about family holidays. How, many years ago they had gone on a holiday and had had the time of their life, just sitting in the car traveling, being together with family. Since that time, life had become too busy, the parents were now doing every thing they could to get ahead in life, to provide, pay bills and go for their dreams, to the point that now there was no time left over for family. I have found that the stuff that we get for our children, as nice as it may be never really means all that much to them, but what they really long for is time with mom and dad. It seems people have so much on their plate with everyday life stuff, that they don’t take time for the people closest to them, their family. I find myself fighting to find time enough to just be with my family. Finding a balance in life is the key but you better take the time or someone else will. Should we really wonder why there are so many family problems? Many times it is simply because people are more concerned about themselves and what they want and they forget about the people right around them thinking they will always be there just because they’re family. We take them for granted, and then we wake up one day and find that they are gone and we did not even see it coming because we were so busy with our own life, doing our own thing. Then once they are gone, reality hits and you realize that all the material gain without them means nothing. By then in many cases it is to late to get them back. Whether it is your wife, husband or children take the time to meet their needs and you will have them for a lifetime. I basically started ministry by visiting the elderly. I would go to Seniors Homes and visiting with some who I knew from this community and many who were at onset complete strangers. I asked all of them the same question, namely, “If you could live your life over again what would you do?” the vast majority of them said they would have spent more time with their family. Their reasoning was that while their children were young they were too busy working, then when they retired and had the time to spend with their kids, now their kids were too busy building their own dreams and had no time for them. It does not seem fair, but I liken it to a bank account, if all you do is withdraw and never deposit you will soon have nothing to withdraw from. There are a great many families that look great on the outside but are so empty and relationship… well, it’s just not there. But with God there is always hope! You may feel like humpty dumpty, after he fell off the wall, and no one seems to be able to put things back together for you, but if you will let God help you he can restore your life. I wouldn’t pretend to promise you that everything is going to be perfect but you can begin to rebuild and get your priorities back in order. You can’t put God first and not have a great family life because God is a giver and by following him you too will learn to give. Ask Jesus to be your helper to change you into the person he wants and he will help you! Take the time for your family! Your Vote has Value by Barrie Richardson Soon, we will choose local representatives who spend what we often regard as confiscatory property taxes. How many of us will even express ourselves? Records show that under 30% of us will actually vote. Yet, it is not hard to find strong vocal opinions that if translated into votes would frighten the bejabbers out of any current office-holder. The Price of Freedom is not only that we take up arms against enemies who would steal our liberty, but that we use the ballot box to oppose those who do not provide Value for Tax Money. Local government should mean the most to us. From it we expect to get tangible services for our taxes. "Local" is more 'in your face' than the Provincial or Federal bodies. Yet, locally, we do the least to impress on those who seek local office the strong opinions we express on the street, at a party, or in the line-up at the local market. Why is that? Are we just sheep? Determining our tax obligations through the measure of unrealized value is, or comes close to being unlawful. Under British Common Law, "Fair Market Value" is adjudged to be "that price at which a willing seller will convey property or services to a willing buyer". In short, the pivotal element is an actual, not an imaginary, transaction. . No "Fair Market Value" exists if a transaction does not occur. The Crown errs when its agents (local governments) impose an arbitrary value on property that is not on the market. We just grumble and send them our money? As much as we can hear the bleats of anger almost every day, we see little of this anger at election time. Is it not time to say, "We're mad as hell and we're not going to take it anymore"? Throughout every election campaign, there are abundant opportunities to hear what your candidates want to do for you (or to you). You can listen to bafflegab. You can be dazzled by the fact that a real live candidate actually spoke to you and asked for your support. They make you feel flattered and so wonderfully important. They want you to roll over and vote without vigilance. Your civic duty demands otherwise. Decide how a candidate wants to spend your after-income-tax money. Then, YOU hold their feet to the fire. They must be told what you will tolerate. They must understand that the Genius of Democracy does not reside only with the ones chosen to sit in Councils, but comes from the souls of people who pay taxes and who vote for whoever manages them. This year, we are selecting four-year municipal councils. If you're really outraged, offer yourself for nomination to an office. Get to the polls and vote; if you are a seasonal resident use the mail-in ballot: And, if there are candidates who boast of wisdom greater than yours, cast them OUT! You're the boss --- BE the boss. |
