Jim Karcher was was born in Canton China in 1927, his first language being Cantonese. He was the eldest of three boys born to Mary and Franklin Karcher who were Presbyterian Missionaries in China. They lived for three years under Japanese occupation. Jim, his brothers and mother left China in the summer of 1941and returned to the USA. His father's health failed and he left on the last boat out of Hong Kong, a voyage lasting two months, back to the Pittsburg. There he settled with his family and started up a medical practice in 1942. After high school, Jim left home and served in the navy for 19 months. He then attended Pittsburg University and Pittsburg Theological Seminary where he was ordained. Jim's ministry took him to Ohio and Scotland. In Scotland he met and married Eileen. They moved from Scotland to Pittsburg where they lived for 30 years. The last six years of ministry took them to Vaparaiso Indianna. They now reside in Hamet California but travel 2800 miles each summer to their cottage on Chandos Lake. They are regular attenders and supporters of Trinity United Church.
