Man Drowns After Becoming Fatigued While Swimming |
|
A 20-year-old Mississauga man has died after
succumbing to fatigue while swimming in Stoney Lake north of Peterborough.
At approx. 3:00 p.m. yesterday (26July2007) O.P.P. were called when it was
reported that a man had gone under the water while swimming and had failed
to surface. Investigation to date has determined that a group of people
had been swimming from an island on the Stoney Lake in an attempt to reach
the south shore. When one of the swimmers became tired, he turned around
in an attempt to swim back to the island. The friend that was swimming
with the deceased man also turned around to escort him back to the island.
During the return swim the male again became winded and was not able to
continue. Attempts were made to assist him to shore however they were
unsuccessful and the man slipped under the water. Local cottagers and
employees from Carveth’s Marina as well as members from the Douro-Dummer
Fire Department searched the area by boat. At approx. 4:15 p.m. the body
of the man was located in approximately 11 feet of water and brought to
the surface. Paramedics who had gone out on the lake attempted to
resuscitate the man but were unsuccessful. The body was transported to
shore and then taken to the Peterborough Regional Health Centre by
ambulance where Devere FOSTER (age 20) of Hurontario St. in Mississauga
was pronounced dead. A post mortem has been scheduled for today at the
LakeRidge Health Centre in Oshawa.
Police continue to investigate.

Heroic Efforts by Nurse, Police Officer and the
Child’s Father, Save Baby’s Life |
|
A sixteen-month-old baby is alive today thanks
to the quick actions of her father, a passing off-duty nurse and a
patrolling O.P.P. officer. Yesterday (18 August 2007) at approx. 1:45 p.m.
a family was picnicking in the Eels Creek area of North Kawartha Twp.
north of Peterborough. The family’s sixteen-month-old child wandered away
from the family undetected. A frantic search was initiated by family
members and the child was observed floating face down in the Eels Creek as
it runs under Hwy #28. The father of the child quickly entered the river
and removed his daughter from the water and brought her to the west shore
of the river. A passing motorist was flagged down for assistance. The
driver who was an off-duty nurse quickly came to the aid of the child by
initiated C.P.R. as the child was not breathing. A Peterborough County
O.P.P. Officer was patrolling Hwy #28 in the Eels Creek area and swiftly
initiated the Emergency Medical System. He then ran to the child’s aid and
assisted the off duty nurse with C.P.R. The child’s breathing was restored
and members of the North Kawartha Twp. Fire Department assisted further by
administering oxygen to the now recovering child. The child was then taken
by ambulance to the Peterborough Regional Health Centre and then transfer
to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa by Air Ambulance
in stable condition but suffering from hypothermia. Earlier today the
child was released from Hospital and is now resting at home with her
family and doing fine.
