27 July, 2007 Man Drowns After Becoming Fatigued While Swimming

A 20-year-old Mississauga man has died after succumbing to fatigue while swimming in Stoney Lake north of Peterborough. At approx. 3:00 p.m. yesterday (26July2007) O.P.P. were called when it was reported that a man had gone under the water while swimming and had failed to surface. Investigation to date has determined that a group of people had been swimming from an island on the Stoney Lake in an attempt to reach the south shore. When one of the swimmers became tired, he turned around in an attempt to swim back to the island. The friend that was swimming with the deceased man also turned around to escort him back to the island. During the return swim the male again became winded and was not able to continue. Attempts were made to assist him to shore however they were unsuccessful and the man slipped under the water. Local cottagers and employees from Carveth’s Marina as well as members from the Douro-Dummer Fire Department searched the area by boat. At approx. 4:15 p.m. the body of the man was located in approximately 11 feet of water and brought to the surface. Paramedics who had gone out on the lake attempted to resuscitate the man but were unsuccessful. The body was transported to shore and then taken to the Peterborough Regional Health Centre by ambulance where Devere FOSTER (age 20) of Hurontario St. in Mississauga was pronounced dead. A post mortem has been scheduled for today at the LakeRidge Health Centre in Oshawa.

Police continue to investigate.
