Florida State Shuffleboard Champion Lives in Apsley
by R. Allen

In 1996 Bet Pitts, a resident of Apsley, won the Florida State Shuffleboard Championship with her partner Ellie Prevost of Maine. As a professional Bet and her late husband John, a retired OPP officer, toured North America, competing in state, provincial and local tournaments.

In 1995 Bet and John, as members of the Canadian team, competed in the International Shuffleboard Tournament held in Lakefield, Ohio. The competition was against teams from the United States, Japan, Australia, Zimbabwe, and others. Team Canada, both ladies and men, won the championship.

Bet is now semi-retired from professional competition, but still competes in the Florida State Masters (top eight ladies) and manages to place respectably. After nearly 15 years of competing professionally, Bet is now content in retreating to her winter residence in Bradenton Florida and playing shuffleboard with her many friends.

Well done Bet.

Congratulations
Pte. Post, Pte. Currie and Pte. Conlin!

The Department of National Defence has a program in which senior high school students can join the Military Reserves and do a co-op training program while still attending school. Many students throughout Peterborough county applied to this prestigious program, but only 13 were accepted. Amazingly, 3 of these 13 came from our small town of Apsley. Jordon Post, Zach Currie and Tamara Conlin all signed up and began training in January 2007 with the Infantry in the Hasting and Prince Edward Regiment. In June 2007 they all received their Soldier Qualification (SQ). All 3 have continued on with the Canadian Forces, attending a month long training program in July, in Meaford, Ontario. There, at a spectacular graduation ceremony they received their DP1Infantry Qualification. Pte. Post, Pte. Currie and Pte. Conlin have all been recommended for employment in a rifle section in their home unit. Pte. Conlin will also be attending Exercise Maple Defender in Wainwright, Alberta in August. The exercise is an advanced land-based combat exercise specific to fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan. Congratulations and the best of luck to three outstanding individuals who help to make our country proud.

Arthritis & Your Hands

Arthritis affects many people. It frequently attacks the joints of the hands causing pain and disability. If you suffer with this, reduce unnecessary stress and strain on your joints by using your hands correctly.

1. Never force your joints beyond their limits.
2. Take time to relax your hands throughout the day, especially when knitting or writing.
3. Do not hold your hand in the same position for long periods of time.
4. Increase the size of the pen or tool handle that you are using to avoid a tight hand grip.
5. Use both hands when gripping.

Remember, maintaining movement is important to the health of the hand joints.
