Apsley
Village Market
Officially Opened

The skirl of bagpipes echoed throughout the village of Apsley on the sunny morning of Saturday, July 28, signifying the start of a ceremony to officially open the Apsley Village Market. The ceremony marked the culmination of the the efforts of members of the North Kawartha Community Development Association, including project coordinator Sandy Zimmerman and Apsley Village Market Manager Meredeth MacKay, and the many volunteers and community businesses that donated time and materials in order to make the Market a reality.

The Apsley Legion Colour Guard, led by piper and Legion President Don Grant, got the event underway, followed by a few remarks from Legion Vice-President Juanita Kemp. Pastor John Trotter delivered the benediction.

The volunteers who gave their time to the project were then recognized. Sandy Zimmerman presented certificates to all local businesses who had donated materials to the project, and Meredeth MacKay presented Legion pins to all community volunteers who had given their time and expertise by building, painting, organizing and doing all the things that need to get done to make a project successful.

Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock MP Barry Devolin, on hand for the ceremony, spoke of the importance of markets in giving residents access to locally grown foods. He then cited the Apsley Village Market as an example of how a community based initiative led by dedicated volunteers, in conjunction with funding from government agencies such as the Community Futures Development Corporation (CFDC) can yield a positive result.

Sandy Zimmerman, with Legion President Don Grant by her side, then accepted a cheque for $5,000 from MP Barry Devolin and Judy Heffernan of the CDFC. Sandy and Don had worked together to obtain the grant for the market. The market was officially opened with the cutting of the ceremonial ribbon by Barry Devolin, and the market goers were treated to music by The Black Fly Band as they browsed.

On Lawns and Aquatic Weeds
by Professor Osprey

While I take issue with parts of the Jack Lake Plan and any attitude that dictates my behavior or aesthetics of the lake shore, I do think the Water Quality is impacted by the maintenance of highly cultured lawns right at lake level. “Lawn Vanity” and “Lawn Envy” are not appropriate obsessions within the relaxed ambiance of a lake-side cottage.

Ironically, at lake level, capillary action via the soils draws nutrient-rich water up through the soil which is supplied by the transverse movement of the lake water under the shore.

Adding Nitrogen and Phosphorus to the mix by fertilizing these lawns accomplishes two things.

It certainly produces a city-quality lawn, which is as fitting at the Lake as a wedding dress at a dog-fight.

It really feeds the weeds and creates a tangle of unwanted vegetation in the water in front of the lawn in question. For that matter it encourages weeds for hundreds of feet in any direction. If a yellow dye was added to the fertilizer, owners could see that a week after application, the fertilizer is in the lake … it is that immediate.

I once heard a story about a tourist visiting Windsor Castle in England. He encountered one of the groundskeepers mowing the grass around some flower beds; by hand.

When asked the secret to having such a lovely expanse of grass, the Groundskeeper replied, “All we do is cut it weekly and water it each morning before the sun is up, unless it rains.”

“That’s all?” asked the tourist,” I thought you’d fertilize, de-thatch, and do all sorts of work. How can you say that it is only water and mowing?”

He added, “Well, it works. We’ve being doing it for 700 years.”

Folks, you do not need to fertilize water-side lawns. They’ll soak up the nutrients they need from the adjoining lake, all you may need to do is water the surface, and mow it, making sure the clippings do not go into the water.

In fact applying fertilizer is a negative act, adding to the nitro-phosphate burden of the water, intensifying weed growth and providing that slimly feeling when you swim into a weed bed.

In any event this is not the city, where lawn appearance is almost an Olympic sport.

It is Jack Lake, where you come to get away from the pressures of city life. One of those pressures can be to have the greenest, most lush, weed-free lawn on the block. Relax, let it grow, enjoy the feel of natural grass under you toes, and help keep the weeds out of your lake and shorelines.

Soldier Boy
Don’t go to Nineveh
 No oil for you
Beneath her skirts of sand
Walk the other mile
 Find your Golden Girl
 And make her smile
 For you Old soldiers
Will talk you
To death
For mothers cry
When babies die
That’s for you
Soldier Boy
 If your blood
Soaks desert sand
Flee to Tarshish
And find there
An end of days
Among tall pines
Run from Nineveh
She’s just a whore
And you can choose
The Tarshish shore
 Recapture
Joys lost in youth
The moon light shudder
When jasmine blossoms
Release
A heady fragrance
That frees a lonely heart

Soldier Boy
Don’t march to Nineveh
In Death’s Valley
 Leaders wear a vested veil
Ripping you off
Poisoning middle age
What I wanted
In youthful fantasy
 Didn’t make me happy
My hands did hide
An empty heart
 An honest smile
Washed my face
 In cool Siloam water
 Rolled back my soldier years
That wore me down In the dust
She hid me
 From the slithering viper
That would sting me back
To old age
And steal my dignity
Now I remember
Blood red poppies grew in Nineveh
 Where I played the whore
And bound for glory I kissed the cup
To forget
That corporations lie
Boy soldiers die
And I so scared I did cry
“Help me find the Light”
