Barrie P. Richardson

The man sits quiet ‘neath Cedar boughs, to see grand-children play

They seek adventures with sticks for swords, holding phantom foes at bay
Or a group hives off to find a game where three or four have parts
He sits back in the Cedar grove and marvels at their joy
They are his family jewels and they flash with youngsters’ sparks

And yet another group will morph, a mix of small and tall They’re off to scavenge in the woods for treasures large and small
Their uncle’s drawn a trail with clues to aid them on their quest To guide them to the bounty waiting under stumps and rocks That uncle/son’s a gemstone in the old man’s treasure chest
His mind retreats to years now gone where each child was a pup
When he and She would be the ones teaching games they conjured up
With moistened eyes he sees this day how changing roles have run
They’ve passed on to the sons and daughters, the challenge to amuse
And they in turn do entertain, giving joy to each young one…

… And to the man ‘neath Cedar boughs who sees grand-children play

His treasure chest is overfull with each daughter and each son
And partners joined into the clan to share the toil and fun
By going out into the woods their offspring learn the way
Of gath’ring round and being attached to sisters, cousins, brothers
While the old man sits ‘neath Cedar boughs to see grand-children play

They’re all his jewels, great treasures all and they shine in grand array
The only treasure worth life’s game is their joyful noisy play Fair close to quiet Cedar boughs, just an old man’s glance away.

Smoke Alarm Programme

Firefighters will be stopping by your home in the coming weeks to check your smoke alarms. They are handing out some information on smoke alarms and testing your alarms for free. The Ontario Fire Code now requires a smoke alarm on each level of your home or cottage. Our crews can answer any questions you have and assist in making sure your home or cottage is in compliance. Our goal is to make sure every home and cottage in the municipality has working smoke alarms in order to save lives and property. Last year one of the structure fires we attended could have been put out with a pail of water if it had a working smoke alarm instead of gutting the upper storey. The owner was at home on the main floor and had no idea there was a fire on the second floor until it was well involved.

Fines are in place for non compliance but our approach this year will be striving for compliance without enforcement. We will keep a record of all the residences we attend and note cooperation and test results. Insurance companies and the Ontario Fire Marshal are interested in these facts.

Fire Station 2 will be Moving

This year the Fire Department through Council was successful in its bid to purchase the former Boyer car lot property on Hwy 28 at Apsley. The property is approximately 10 acres in total with a large paved parking lot and a building with 2 large apparatus bays. The 10 acres of mixed bush backing onto the creek will serve the department well for several training purposes. The location on Hwy 28 provides for excellent response to all areas of the municipality without always having to respond through a 50 Km/h built up residential area. The building will have a training room big enough for the entire department, offices for the Fire Chief and Deputy, a central stores and room to park 4 fire trucks. Renovations include removing all the 30 yr old showroom glass and insulating the entire building for better heating and cooling efficiencies. The property and all renovations were entirely made possible through an Ontario Provincial Government grant. Renovations are expected to be completed sometime late fall.

Burn Permits are required for all open air burning in the Municipality of North Kawartha. No daytime burning between 8AM and 6PM. Fines are being issued for non compliance. Fines could range from $350 up to $50,000 and/or imprisonment.
