After the Hit
by Bill Johnson

After our tank was hit we spent the night along with other disabled tanks, waiting for the mechanics to arrive see what they could repair. They are not armourers (men trained to work on guns). However they did their best to get our gun to recoil. Then we were sent to join our regiment.

They were getting ready to move to another location in the cover of night. These moves at night were very precarious as the roads were narrow and we weren’t allowed to use lights. Dust blew up from the tank ahead as it changed gears making it impossible to see the road, a tiring way to drive. Eventually we were ordered to stop and wait by the side of the road till dawn.

One night there was one German aeroplane that flew overhead and dropped a flare. The light was so bright we felt like we standing naked. This happened night after night until an order was received that at a given time all possible guns were to be turned towards the sky and fire at this plane. There were more regiments then ours. When the plane came across the sky we all shot together. The pilot opened his engine wide and raced away never to be seen again!!

The next day we move up close to the Gothic Line where Germans had set up a strong defensive position at the top a mountain. When we moved in we found our artillery units stationed at the base, prepared for a shoot. It was to start when it was dark and we would also join in on this barrage. The Germans would not know how much artillery we had which would be greatly increased by our tanks. Our regiment alone would increase the firing line by 40 to 50 guns. When the bombardment started the ground shook and the noise was deafening.

Our tank fired one shot and the gun got stuck again. The Captain was on the wireless blasting our Lieutenant for not shooting. The Captain may have been a good tactician, but mechanically he was lost. He did not seem to understand things do break down.

My tank was sent back where there was an armourer to fix the gun and I was ordered to drive the mechanic’s tank, which leads me to an adventure with a Chandos lake cottager.

Council Retains a “Closed Meeting Investigator”

As part of meeting the requirements of the new Municipal Act changes, Council approved the retention of a Closed Meeting Investigator. Although there have not been any problems with North Kawartha’s council, the provincial government made this change to the act because of problems occurring in other parts of the province. Some councils have strayed from the strict agendas and have discussed public items behind closed doors. Closed sessions, also known as “in Camera (Caucus)”, sessions are only for the discussion of specific subjects, such as personnel or legal issues. North Kawartha Council will be retaining Mr. Stephen Fournier, a well-respected ex-Chair of the Eastern Wardens with substantial municipal experience. His services are offered through the county for a cost of only be $300 per year and this meets the requirements of the Municipal Act.
