I am not sure how many of you know anything about the Chandos Lake Lobster Fishers Association so I will give you a brief outline before we make a small presentation.

Two unemployed Nova Scotians and their mates, Joe and Chuck and Wendy and Janice, conceived the CLLFA over dinner at a Chandos Lake home. The organization was soon joined by neighbours including Ric and Heather, Ramsay and Madelyn, and of course Bruce and Jacoba.

The stated objectives of the organization were to cross breed Atlantic lobsters with Chandos Lake crayfish and to provide a community annual meeting (every 2 years) where annual reports were to be received and a lobster dinner with especially imported Atlantic Lobsters (until such time as the first annual lobster harvest occurred) were to served.

Although the breeding program never did succeed, the dinners were very successful and the Annual Reports of Committees were well received.

Our Purser, Jacoba Dunn always presented a successful Financial Report with balances ranging from one to three million dollars.

However like all organizations of this type, things happen. Coba left us during the past year. Bruce moved to Bobcaygeon. Chuck and Janice moved to Peterborough. Joe started to Globe Trot even more than usual and Wendy was spending most of her time between Chandos and the City. Ric and Heather became busy with children’s marriages and only Ramsay and Madelyn were on approximately the same schedule.

In the words of those of us born and bred in Nova Scotia, in relation to the status of the CLLFA.. * The Arse just fell out of her* and as a result we decided to dismantle the organization.

Even though Purser Coba had reported over 3 million in assets (plus 24 butter dishes and a variety of Atlantic Provinces flags) we found that we did have a smaller bank account than her reports indicated. After considering the situation we unanimously decided to give the total of the bank balance to a cause very dear to Coba, The North Kawartha Food Bank.

Coba was not only a great loss to our organization but also to this community. Along with her good friend Judy Franks she started and ran the Annual Chandos Walk For Cancer, along with husband Bruce she organized a little known about annual Christmas program that resulted in many children receiving gifts from a very large and jolly Santa along with a cheerful Santa’s helper dressed in green.

But Coba’s main interest in the community was this Food Bank. Her hard work and vision is still being felt in the success of this very important community organization.

So, on behalf of the now defunct Chandos Lobsters Fishers Association it is my privilege to present this money order in the amount of $578.82 in Coba’s name to the Food Bank. The Food Bank is a vital part of the North Kawartha community and we cannot think of a better use for the bank balance.

Coba... we miss you... we love you.. and we know that this presentation would have met with your approval…

Congratulations to the winners or our Mother’s Day Essay Contest
In your own words you’ve inspired us by your love and appreciation for your mothers. Thanks to ALL who entered the contest. Great job!

How do you put into words how you feel about the best woman you’ve ever know?

Mom... just hearing that word brings me a sense of warmth and a safe feeling, that’s how mom has always made me feel. She has always been a friend, confidant, mentor, disciplinarian (if that’s the word), doctor, baker, cook, laundress, advisor, you name it, and she’s been it and still is (except for laundry, I have to do my own now).

My mother is a warm, caring and humorous woman. She’s been through 80 years of raising kids, raising grandchildren and raising animals. I think she has had 27 dogs named Skipper and 32 cats named Toby. I’m glad she had more names for her kids.

I was never more scared than when she told me she had cancer. I was a wreck, but never let her know it. She was a rock, of course and always positive. She never appeared to be scared and I never saw her cry and she finally beat it, which was the best day of my life, I thanked God a lot that day and everyday since.

She is the foundation on which I based my life and the best advice she ever gave me was that no one is perfect, just be the best person you can be and enjoy life.

I could say a lot more, even write a book, but that's mom in a nutshell.

My mom rocks. It must be very hard taking care of three kids. I love her, she is the best. If I had one million dollars I would give it to her. I would do anything for her. She is worth over one million dollars. No other mom could beat that. All those special moments her and I have had together. Like taking me to a craft show or when I broke my arm and had to have surgery. She stayed up all night to make sure I wa alright. She is always there for me no matter what. She tries her best and that’s the best she can do. My mom is cool, beautiful, awesome, generous and smart. Me and my mom bake together. I have learned a lot of things from her. I don’t know what I would do without her. I love the times mom and I go shopping, we do that a lot. That’s why I love her so much. She means everything to me. I love making pictures for her. When she is away I think about her all the time. At school or when I’m at a asleep-over I miss my mom when ever and where ever. No matter what she will always be there and I will always love my mommy forever. So this is why I feel my mommy should win this special gift!
