While We Still Last

Is it me or do others feel the gradual destruction of their bodies while their minds and sense of delight remain young?

As we get older is it natural to feel aches and pains and engage in higher levels of maintenance, yet not believe the mind and soul have aged as well?

Why is it that in our dreams we see ourselves when we were physically at our best: smart, agile, feeling and looking physically grand with great hair, strong teeth and bright eyes?

Since the onset of our desire for things, for adventure, for the approving eye of an attractive person, we think all things remain possible when in reality our outer shell seems to speed away from its salad days and is attractive only to morticians and loyal spouses.

Just inside the skin, the urges remain.  To go Trout fishing in Alaska.  To sit in the sun on a beach in the South Pacific.  To be sensual and comely to young nymphets or young men without chemical stimulants or cosmetic surgery: To travel afar and hear the “… paddles chunkin’ from Rangoon to Mandalay.”

On reflection, this minor and harmless continuation of self-delusion is one of the blessings of life.  Our legs may weaken, our eyesight blur and our ears hear less of life’s symphony, but our inner prideful eye, still sees us as forever young.

The safety net we have been given is that whatever properties we imagine for ourselves in our heads, we ultimately encounter the reality of the body that remains.  When hair thins and lines define the journey of our faces: When knees do not bend: When backs ache and stomachs conceal our feet from our eyes, we are protected from doing insult to ourselves and our psyches.  We leave to the young, that to which the young are intended to enjoy, and for which God has made them mutually attractive.  This preserves our species.  If the young were drawn to the experienced, patient and gentler older man or woman, our hormone-driven youth would not have partners and the birth-rate would almost cease.  The human race would be reduced to a slow trot.

However, the ability to keep on living with mellowed joy is made easier when we stop and pretend that within that image in the looking glass, there beats the heart of a long-remembered youth.  Potentially explosive, but with a fuse long ago dampened or burned up by having had our turn on the youthful stage.

In this time which we enjoy or endure, we, as the Broadway actress - Tallulah Bankhead said,

“We burned the candle at both ends.  It shall not last the night, but; Oh my foes and Oh my friends, we cast a lovely light.”

We need a registered day care facility

"Peterborough Social Services (as the Best Start lead) had provided us [Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board] with a letter that they would support wage subsidy for Apsley based on consideration on a shared basis. They were unable to support a definitive statement indicating that they could cover wage subsidy. The Ministry of Education has denied our request for Day Care spaces at Apsley given that the wage subsidy is not being provided without this limitation."

Sherry Summersides, Associate Director of Education, KPRDSB, April 26, 2007

URGENT: ACTION REQUIRED IMMEDIATELY

We need a registered day care facility. We ask the Ministry of Education to collaborate with the Ministry of Children and Youth so that we will truly have a school which is the "educational hub" of the community, as stated in Education Ministry goals. Our school is to be rebuilt this year. Detailed architectural plans are underway. Therefore, we request that you give immediate consideration to this issue.

  • There are strong reasons for creating and providing day care in Apsley: · Apsley is a remote area designated as such by Ministry of Education. The nearest registered day care is over half an hour away. Parents often work further away.

  •  The need for a registered day care has been substantiated within the last year by Peterborough Social Planning Council. (1) Our township is the only area in the county without reasonable access to registered day care. · The school is the best location to provide a seamless day for children and parents when there is a day care on site. (2) The rebuild of the school gives us this opportunity.

  •  Kawartha Child Care, an experienced, successful provider, already partners with the school board and Social Services in Peterborough City/County. Kawartha Child Care has a financial plan for our area and a wage subsidy is not needed. (3) Imagine the cost to try to "catch up" children who lack a good early learning experience.

1. We have had two needs assessments in North Kawartha in the past three years, both of which have verified the need for day care services. (6 infant spaces, 20 toddler spaces, 16 preschool spaces and 20 JK/SK spaces were planned.) The trend in our area exhibits an increase in young families with children.

2. Without a registered day care, we have no consistent program preparing our preschoolers for education. A registered day care organization provides services in a safe environment before and after school as well.

3. The government has allocated $900,000 of federal funding to Peterborough city/county for day care. A percentage of our county taxes from North Kawartha is given for day care services. With no registered day care, our families realize no benefits even though we are compelled to pay!

4. Economic development is desperately needed in our community. Providing day care is an obvious infrastructure essential.
