For over 15 years the Royal
Canadian Legion in Ontario has sponsored and organized youth educational
programs involving over 1,600 public and high school students annually.
The Legion and school boards work together in this venture. The programs
begin with the remembrance poster and literary contest (essays and poems)
culminating with the public speaking competitions. This is an Ontario
province wide program. This year, the Apsley Legion was selected to host
the second level speaking event in which 45 students from Lindsay,
Peterborough, Havelock, Haliburton, Oshawa, Port Hope, and Lakefield
competed. The speeches were excellent, and included such topics as Egypt,
My Trip to Nigeria, Cows, Religion, Maria Von Trapp, Anorexia, and
Renaissance Art, just to name a few. It was a seven hour program and over
100 family members and friends in attendance were treated to interesting
presentations.
Congratulations to Apsley's
Kassandra Sewell who placed second speaking on Complainers and Julie
Hockridge, who received a Participation Award for her speech on Breast
Cancer. Congratulations to all of the students who participated; well
done. The Ontario Provincial finals take place in Chatam, in May, with
gold and silver medal presentations and monetary awards up to $1,000.
To the Legion Executive and
volunteers, teachers and staff from Legion zones F-1 to F-5, and all
participants and their families, many thanks on a successful year. |
