Help us to build technological
success for all… at Apsley Central Public School |
|
Apsley Central Public School is looking to become a fully technologically minded school. Over the past two years we have undertaken a few initiatives toward this end. In the 2005 – 2006 school year the staff became immersed in various technologiesincluding the use of a Smartboard (interactive whiteboard) in the classroom, LCD projectors, MP3 players and speakers, internal e- mail and talking books on the computer. In the 2006 – 2007 school year we have continued our implementation of technology and embarked on completing a pilot project for the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board using videoconferencing in the elementary classroom. Our grade 2/3 class was directly involved in videoconferencing with a class in both Australia and Japan. Over the three-month period our students were able to learn first hand about different cultures, talk to children about their interests and broaden their interest and understanding of the world. We found the introduction and use of the videoconference machine enhanced children’s learning, their retention of facts and gave them live connections for their work in the school. Apsley Central Public School was recently deemed prohibitive to repair and will be re-built in the near future. The new school is to be built over the next year and a half on the same site and we are looking to have the school outfitted with wireless technology. We are also looking to have every one of our six classrooms outfitted with up to date technology. Until now, the school has managed to purchase all of the technology from fundraising in the community. There has been a terrific amount of support, but we now need your help. The village has given us so much assistance and also needs to help with other initiatives. Apsley Central School has seen the enthusiasm the village has for the technology we have introduced to the school and believe the readers of this newsletter have similar interests in forwarding technology to create great learning experiences and an excellent forward thinking environment for education. Apsley Central School is currently seeking charitable donations toward making our dream a reality. Donations of all sizes can be given by contacting the principal (Susan Matthews) directly at (705) 656- 4231. In the summer months, please leave a message on the phone and the messages will be retrieved. A charitable donation receipt will be issued. Apsley Central Public School, the students, staff and parents thank you for making our dreams a reality.

Kids are urged to join us for the TD Summer Reading Club. Beginning on July 11th 9:30-11AM at the Apsley Branch, and on July 12th 1-2PM at the Woodview Branch, this program offers children ages 6-12 fun, free activities to encourage them to read and continue developing their literacy skills throughout the summer. This program runs for six weeks. Research has shown that the playful approach of these clubs is extremely effective in getting more children to increase their reading skills. This year’s theme – Lost Worlds – features civilizations from the past. Award-winning Canadian artist, Joe Weissmann, designed the eye-catching illustration on the program materials. Please register at the Apsley Branch. Make sure to visit our website at: www.northkawarthalibrary.com where you can reserve or renew a book, view our entire catalogue of materials, read periodicals and newspapers and browse through information databases now available in partnership with Knowledge Ontario. Check the website for upcoming computer workshops and training. Remember High Speed internet is FREE at the library. Printing and faxing are available. Save the date for our 10th Annual Library Dinner & Auction on Thursday, August 16th at the Apsley Community Centre.

I was struck reading the June Apsley voice the opinion of Councillor Carolyn Amyotte that private day care is inconsistent and undependable. This opinion was expressed during a debate caused by the inconsistency and undependability of government funding. Sincerely, Scott Hughes |

| Dear Apsley Voice |
|
I would like to correct the inaccurate statement that Mr. Hutton attributed to me in his June 2007 Council report regarding the child care deputation at the May 15th North Kawartha Council meeting. The following are my comments taken from the approved minutes of the May 15th meeting: Councillor Amyotte related to the issue as she is a working Mom and there are some private individuals providing excellent care. The issue is the availability and consistency of the daycare provided. Are there other opportunities in the community for daycare infrastructure? If there is going to be a restructuring we need to keep it in the forefront that child care is necessary. She put forward that Council try to come up with some options and solutions, perhaps offering another municipal building. At no time did I state that private daycare providers were 'undependable' and I certainly don't want my daughter's caregivers to think that I believe them to be unreliable. That is simply not true. My husband and I feel very fortunate to have two caring and trustworthy individuals care for our 2 year old daughter, which allows both of us to continue working. Sincerely, Carolyn Amyotte, Councillor and Working Mom.
