For over 80 years Royal Canadian Legions
across Canada have been supporting programs for veterans, their families,
seniors, as well as health care, charities, youth education, and much
more. We know the Legion's dedication and participation in supporting the
community, but what is not widely known, is the Legion's major commitment
to assist and enrich the lives of millions of Canadians each year. The
Apsley Legion is part of District F, which contains 55 Legions which are
subordinate to Provincial Command. Command establishes the major projects
and priorities as well as the support from each Legion. In 2006 District F
was very successful. Some of the projects and efforts which the Apsley
Legion's district contributed to financially (through District F) are
listed below:
Hospital Trust -
66 veterans under full-time care at Sunnybrook and Parkwood hospitals
vacationed at St. Joseph Lake. Money raised for the program exceeded
$70,000. Lakeridge Health Cancer Centre will receive a grant of $125,000.
Charitable
Foundation - Fourteen grants of more than $100,000 were
given to medical centres and hospitals. Recipient communities included
Apsley, Kinmount, Hastings, Port Perry, Pickering, Uxbridge, Trenton,
Whitby, and Ajax.
Poppy Fund -
The Year of the Veteran in 2005 led to an increase in donations received.
Over $820,000 was raised by District F last year. The money raised from
annual Poppy sales is used to support a wide spectrum of programs,
including senior and veteran care, youth initiatives, financial assistance
programs, and more. Veteran and Seniors Services - In Peterborough County
alone, over 11,000 veterans, their widows, and family members received
medical, legal, financial, and affordable housing assistance.
The 55 Legion branches in District F have over
24,000 members. In Ontario their are nearly 300 branches in five districts
which all contribute to the Legion's programs. If the magnitude of
financial support is as large in the four other Ontario Districts as they
are in our own District F, then the assistance provided to Canadians by
the Legion must be overwhelming. To the community, both full-time
residents and cottagers; thank you for your continued support. You are the
ones making all of this possible.
