Come to Apsley on March 3.
The Apsley Winter Carnival is better than ever.

The Apsley Winter Carnival goes on Saturday March 3, from 7:30 AM and winds up with a Roast Beef Dinner and Dance with LIVE  music at the Canadian Legion in Apsley.

Hey, for families there’s something for everyone.

  • Sled-dog races in various classes by expert racers on, we think, one of the finest race courses in Ontario.  See how our great-great-grandfathers used dogs to tame winter before the Ski-Doo and the ATV.  There will be skijoring races, a skill perfected by northern Europeans as a mode of winter transportation. These races are fun and exciting for both participant and spectator.

  • The Trapper’s Carnival features demonstrations of modern, humane          trapping methods and fur handling techniques used for this sustainable harvest. This was important part of Canada’s historical past on which this country was founded by such companies as the Hudson Bay Co (TM)

  • There’s more; there’re races and prizes for kids who want to try sled-dog racing!  Celebrity contests too, see well-known people try not to make fools of themselves.

It’s not just sled-dogs and trapping events, there’s horse-drawn sleigh rides, hot food for lunch, LIVE music and free indoor public skating.  Fun for all.

Don’t’ miss this show.  Show your family and our kids how winter work was done when Canada was just a new country.  It’s part of US.

* The Alaskan Malamute Help League is running the sled dog races. This is a group of people that "rescue" these types of dogs when they have been abused, are not wanted by their owners or are race dogs that have been injured or are just too old to race. It is their goal to place the dogs in good homes. They offer clinics to dog owners on health care, training and even "chipping" for identification purposes. The group started 27 years ago when a one-year-old Alaskan Malamute named "Chelsea" was taken to a Vet to be "put down" - the owners didn't want her any more. Chelsea was healthy and the Vet thought she should have another chance. The Vet called an Alaskan Malamute breeder and asked him to take her in. The breeder thought, " Oh what's one more dog". 27 years later the group is still going strong with branches all across North America, in Europe and even Australia. Breeder Dave Hardie started the Alaskan Malamute Help League less than 30 miles (as the crow flies) from Apsley.
