BROWN’S STORE
(excerpt from ‘Up The Burleigh Road ….beyond the boulders’,
with permission)

Brown's Store, 137 Burleigh Street, Apsley was operated by Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Brown who were among the first settlers of the district in 1863. It was run by three generations of Browns (Alexander, Duncan and Stuart Duncan).

On August 31, 1921 D. Brown's store and house burned to the ground. The family lost all of their possessions but decided to rebuild immediately. In order to stay in business they moved to  Roy Brown's Garage and put in a stock of goods in the garage section. The foundation timber, from the nearby woods, was sawn at Mc Coll’s Mill nearby. Neighbours from all over the county came to help rebuild so that  on the 14th of October of the same year, the Browns moved into the store.

(Editor’s note Councillor Arnie Brown is a direct descendant . This book can be purchased at the library in Apsley.

BLARNEYSTONE STARTS SHUTTLE

Residents of Apsley will be happy to know that twice a night, twice per week, the "Shamrock Shuttle" now runs return trips from Aps1ey to the new Woodview Irish pub.

Pick-up times for anybody wishing to come out for darts, dinner or just to watch some hockey on either Wednesday or Saturday night, will be 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., with trips returning to the centre of town at 10:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. on each night.

"Now I can have that extra glass of wine with dinner and not worry about being stopped by the police!" says Brian Ashton, 45, of Chandos Lake.

The Blarney Stone is still looking for 2-4 more players to fill up its 4 team House League of Darts on Wednesday nights. No professionals here, but lots of fun and new single players are divided up amongst the teams every weeknight.

If you would like a free round trip to the Blarney Stone on Wed. or Sat. night, call the pub at (705) 654-3865 for a pickup or just watch for the flashing light green outside the IGA at 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. twice a week.

Have a safe winter and don't drink and drive.
