Willard Gilliland Budd

Willard lived in Toronto and at the age of 5 developed Polio. When he left the hospital, he went to Bradford to live with 2 great-aunts. At 14, he went to live with his grandparents on the Gilliland farm near Baltimore, Ontario. Willard moved here in the fall of 1943 and lived with his uncle Gill. He began working for the Peterborough Lumber Company (P.L) in the spring of 1944, cutting cordwood. He was 19 at the time. In the spring of 1945, the P.L. began to build their sawmill on Mississauga Lake. He worked there all summer and that winter went to Temagami where he worked for Gillis Lumber. He worked for the P.L. as a laborer, then a clerk, and finally in 1951, their Woods Superintendent. Willard and Betty were married in 1949, shortly after her father was killed in a logging accident. In the next eight years, they had three children, a boy named Gordon and two girls named Dale and Robin. They now have four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Willard worked for the P.L. until 1982, a total of 38 years. By that time, the P.L. had been taken over by Cashways who were selling off the P.L. assets, land, and machinery. He bought what they offered, and operated then as B&W Northern Timber Operations Inc. Betty and Willard (B&W) continued to run their company, which became a gravel business, until 2005. In the summer of 1982, they went to Great Bear Lake to Plummer’s Lodge on a fishing trip. The lodge is north of the Arctic Circle and is a wonderful spot. They made 19 trips and had intended to go back. Unfortunately, they didn’t make it. Willard was diagnosed with Cancer in June, 2006. After three months of treatments, he was sent home and told that there was nothing more they could do for him. He struggled through three more months but was able to finish his life at home, where he wanted to be. He will be deeply missed.
