Snowmobile Clubs
Want Better Access to Apsley

Representatives from the Paudash Trail Blazers and the Stoney Lake Sno-Riders Clubs made separate presentations to the council on improving the access to the centre of Apsley by snowmobiles. There were several possibilities discussed including a bridge over Eels Creek near the cemetery and extending an existing culvert. Craig Watson, Roads Supervisor will work with the clubs to investigate various options. Reeve, Jim Whelan said that council believes this is important for the economic development of Apsley.

Road Closure Behind Community Centre

Council approved the closure of the road behind the arena because it constitutes a traffic hazard. The zamboni exits onto this road as well as it is a route for emergency vehicles.

Reeve Whelan said that discussions are now underway to determine if high speed internet access can be provided through satellite service rather than towers. The range of the towers is only 6 k and they are expensive to install.

APSLEY COMMUNITY CARE

Joan Forsyth

There are many good programs and services provided by the volunteers at Community Care but the Meals on Wheels program is exceptional. Cooking for one, no matter what the age or skill of the cook can be a chore.  Over ten years have passed since our frozen meal supplier took the opportunity to combine nutrition with business and began “Private Recipes”.  This is company dedicated to meals specially prepared with seniors nutrient needs in mind.  Food provides the means to sustain physical health.  Many seniors eat alone, so it is especially important that they have access to nutritious meals that take little time or energy to prepare but also look and taste good enough to eat. The meals are also excellent for people coming out of hospital. The meals provided through our Community Care office meet these criterias.  They are traditional foods, with basic flavouring to meet most senior’s tastes and dietary needs.  You can always add a little butter or spice to suit your tastes. The meals are fast frozen to preserve freshness and flavour but take only minutes to reheat in the microwave.  You can have a meal on the table, ready to eat with little expenditure of energy, no shopping, no waste and no dishes! Our volunteers will deliver the meals right into your freezer.  For further information, call the Community Care office at 656-4589.

Community Development Group – First Meeting

Sandy Zimmerman

On the morning of January ll, 22 people gathered at the North Kawartha Public Library in response to an invitation to come together to work on community development in its broadest sense.  This grassroots group was lively, and a brainstorming session produced more than two pages of ideas for community development.  Three ideas were then discussed further in small groups and the results reported back to the whole assembly.  It was personally exciting to experience the energy and enthusiasm with which these topics were tackled.

Others interested in joining us to make things happen are welcome to come out to the next general meeting, Monday, January 29 at 10 am at the North Kawartha Public Library. If you have questions, please phone Helen Osborne (656-4670)  or Sandy Zimmerman (656-2745) .
