A.B.C. Seniors

Dianne Langille

We started 2007 with a delicious roast pork dinner prepared, with love, by Helen P. Join us for our Tuesday lunches and Euchre games.

Our Xmas dinner, Dec 5th, was a huge success. Excellent turkey and trimmings were enjoyed by 106 seniors. Some delightful entertainment followed with a few steps from Alice's Line Dancers, and great music was provided by Norm Post.

A delicious dinner at noon and an exceptional show at the Famous People Players made our

Outing to Toronto very enjoyable. Possibly, a luncheion outing may be arranged for March

and watch for details of Fred's Euchre Tournament in May.

Elections are coming up again. Nominations at the February dinner meetings, and completion

Of elections at the first meeting in March. This is an annual process. Come and join us.

How to Host a Safe Party

By Graham Allen
(The North Kawartha Community Policing Committee  (NKCPC)

Whether it's a special occasion, or just friends getting together, everybody loves a party. But if you're hosting a party it's important to remember that, while everyone should have a good time, your party goers should not become a danger to to themselves or the community by drinking and driving. The Ontario Community Council on Impaired Driving has come up with the following list to help make it easier for anyone to host a safer party.

Having a Party? Use our top ten party smart tips:

10. Plan activities that require little skill.
9. Have alcohol free drinks.
8. Serve lots of snacks.
7. Be prepared for overnight guests.
6. Serve alcoholic drinks yourself.
5. Don't over-serve.
4. Have cash for taxis.
3. Stop serving alcohol early in the evening.
2. Use designated drivers.
1. Drink sensibly yourself.

Remember,  you are responsible for your guests’ actions and behaviour. With a little pre-party planning, You can ensure that everyone has a good time, without making North Kawartha's road and highways less safe.

North Kawartha Youth Committee

Bethany Armstrong

The Youth Committee is alive and well with 2007 looking to be an exciting year. Starting with the upcoming Winter Carnival on March 3rd, as your NKYC will be helping out the Apsley Lions with this event.

Our elections were held last year with Lori White taking over as Chair and Bethany Armstrong as co-Chair. Christine Everett recently resigned her position as past chair due to scheduling, and we would like to thank Chris for all of her hard work on behalf of the youth in our community.  Lannie Reynolds has rejoined our committee as our advisor and we appreciate his direction.

The Apsley Legion generously allows the youth committee to use their upstairs hall for our bi-monthly meetings, which are held every second Wed. at 4:15 pm.  So if you, or anyone you know are interested, and are between the ages of 13 and 18, feel free to contact us, and come out to some meetings and events! All are welcome!

We have some great ideas for the upcoming year, from fundraisers, to town events, and we hope that you all will continue to come out and show your support, and have some fun!

If you would like to get a hold of us, our e-mail address is: apsleyyouth@hotmail.com  and remember; we are always looking for new members.

Strange Sightings in Woodview

Local resident Mark La Puque was startled Fri., Jan 5th at about 11.30 at night in Woodview, Ont. Strange lights were seen and low giggling sounds were heard from a small creature that darted across Hwy 28, just at Northey’s Bay Road. In fact sightings have been reported most days and nights of the week (except Mondays and Thursdays!). Sargeant Kevin Dignan with the Apsley detachment of the O.P.P. has himself witnessed those 2 legged “elf-like” creatures hopping across the Hwy and into the woods on either side of  THE BLARNEY STONE IRISH PUB since it first opened in Woodview (20km. South of Apsley at Northey’s Bay Road) in December 2006. The Sargeant went on to state that, “No one in my native Ireland has ever caught one of these creatures, but suddenly they are being seen around this new Irish Pub! It is no coincidence”.

Anyone with similar sightings is asked to please report them to the local expert on such creatures, Dublin native Robert Costelloe, proprietor of The Blarney Stone Irish Pub. He can be reached at the restaurant at 705-654-3865 most nights where he hosts dinner and drinks until 11 pm (reservations suggested for Fri and Sat nights)

Travelers along this route will be pleased to know that MTO will be posting signs along Hwy 28 in both directions in the vicinity of  THE BLARNEY STONE IRISH PUB, 6401 Hwy 28 at Northey’s Bay Road in Woodview, advising motorists of these strange “elf -like” sightings. However, as their breeding season, in the middle of March, approaches Mr Costelloe says that the sighting frequency will increase and their frenzy of activity has even been know to infect local inhabitants in the areas where these creatures gather and multiply on March 17th every year…St. Patrick’s Day. So watch for signs coming soon and slow down when driving through Woodview.
