A Tornado, then a Storm of Generosity
by Helen Richardson

After August 2/2006 we on Shady Lane got a shock as trees, some over 20 years old fell nearly everywhere blocking driveways, roads and damaging several structures. It was, and in some cases remains, a mess. There were no injuries or fatalities. Given the intensity or the blow-down of trees, the property damage was minimal. Out of ever mishap comes something to be thankful for, and people to thank. Early in the morning on Aug. 3, Andy Assinck and co-horts Patrick and Russ with Andy’s trusty orange loader was out pushing trees and brush aside to clear a path where driveways were blocked. A total stranger, new to the region and known only as ‘Jack’ and his “Husqvarna” voluntarily walked along Shady Lane cutting tree trunks that blocked the road or a driveway. Truly A Good Samaritan. This first response was important as it shook us out of the sense of shock and into action as best we could. The team of Bud Lehman, John and Jesse Dillon, Ken and Jason Soulze, took their tools and the ever-faithful Mr. John Deere up and down the roads and driveways cutting and pulling fallen and leaning trees out of harm’s way and helped many. At the same time neighbour was often helping neighbour with a blocked lane or a dangerous tree, or the loan of a generator. Despite being without phone for 10 days, and power for a week, we can only wonder at the tremendous effort put in by the teams from Hydro One. (What WAS that funny smoke smell?) Thank you all from those of us on Shady Lane who received your help. These are the kind of gestures that come out of an incident such as a F2 tornado. Thanks, Thanks, Thanks. To all of you --- much obliged.

I am "THEY"

On the radio today, a native Canadian referred to white folks such as me as “they”. In the same interview, I became a “bastard” by my alleged determination to avoid and circumvent roads in the areas of this Province that the Native Canadians have taken over in the Day of Protest. I have some questions:

• Who paid for the highways and roads being blocked by this illegal tactic? I thought taxpayers funded the roads in this country and this province. Last time I checked Native Canadians were net recipients of tax monies, and have no financial or other ownership rights to these thoroughfares. “They” paid for it. Those “bastards” are the taxpayers who expect the government to maintain our right to use.

• Does the Attorney-General of Ontario not see an insurrection when it happens? If white Canadians were to block the roads and burn the pavement under them, would there not be charges pressed and almost military action brought down by the police? Since when is guerrilla-like behavior not subject to the law?

• Since when, did an entire culture who once claimed that nobody owned the land the Creator had given them, now claim that they OWN large parts of the country settled and improved by the immigration of outsiders?

• Do Native Canadians actually believe if, by some suspension of reality, Europeans had never occupied Canada, that the traditional, native life-style of 300 years ago would still be in place? Would TV, Cars and Airplanes never have been acquired by Native Canadians? Gimme a break!
