    Triple Bypass
    By Neil Currie

Did I hear my name? A whisper calling from the dark behind me?

Ah, yes. The Grim Reaper. I felt his presence. Just checking me out.

But I wasn’t ready to go, thanks to five dedicated ladies.

The first, my wife, Margaret, was finally able to persuade me to pop into Emergency at Bancroft Hospital where she had worked as a physiotherapist.

Triage Nurse Janet Stevens, of Apsley, hearing the word “chest” had me under her stethoscope in moments. She quickly brought in Dr. Carolyn Brown who was on emergency duty.

Dr. Brown, not liking what she heard from her stethoscope any more than did Nurse Stevens, called for X-rays, then diuretic then, on the phone, the earliest possible appointment with Dr. Katy Shufelt, Cardiologist, of the Cardiac Clinic in Peterborough.

I was in a state of congestive heart failure, not as bad as a heart attack but just as menacing.

The heart, itself short of blood, was failing to pump enough blood through the lungs to clear the lungs of fluid. My lungs were congested - half full. No wonder my chest felt heavy. No wonder I was short of breath. A wonder I was still alive.

Dr. Shufelt, seeing results of her tests, picked up the phone for the earliest possible surgery date with Dr. Stephanie Brister, of Toronto General Hospital, where I went under Dr. Brister’s knife to happy results.

My first and enduring good fortune was in Margaret recognizing the symptoms that so easily and so often go unrecognized.

Short weeks after surgery I drove to Florida and back in ease and comfort.

PS – There was also a corps of dedicated ladies of all shades and origins in the cardiac ward of Toronto General Hospital who tended to me with grace and kindness and in ways that you wouldn’t want me to have to describe.

    YOUR HEALTH - YOUR COMMUNITY!

Thanks to all for your support and patience throughout our campaign for our new North Kawartha Medical Centre. Donations come in all sizes and we could not have done it without all of you.

There are a few notes of explanation: As previously mentioned; amounts under $100, although appreciated, will not appear on the wall; amounts that do not fit into a category may be recognized separately (ie. $600 would be under Helper, and under Brick); donations given "in honour", or "in memory" are attributed to that person only, and not to the donor. These methods are according to standard practice in the industry. If you would still like to donate, or would like to increase your amount to a higher category; please do so at the Township Office and we will accommodate your recognition on the Wall and in a future issue of The Voice. Of course, it is all tax-receiptable. Although we took all information directly from the pledge sheets, if there are errors or omissions, please contact me as soon as possible: phone: (705) 742-3317 or email: cetaill fer@hotmail.comand we will rectify the situation.

With thanks, Cal Taillefer, Chair NK Medical Centre Capital Campaign
