Queen Elizabeth II Honours
Rosalie McColl

by R. Allen

It's not very often that you meet someone who has spent a lifetime supporting the community and contributing to the well being of others. Apsley is very fortunate, for we have such a person – Mrs. Rosalie McColl. For over 65 years Rosalie, an Apsley native, has been a member of the Federated Women's Institute of Ontario, an organization dedicated to personal growth and community enrichment. She has served a President of the Women's Institute five times, and has held many other executive positions with the group.

I spoke with Rosalie recently, and she reminisced about some of the many projects she has been involved with over the years. She told me about how the Women's Institute brought the first library to Apsley; they leased the land from the Township, had the building constructed, procured the books, and then members took turns looking after it. When the original library burned down on Good Friday, in 1961, the Women's Institute were the driving force in having a new one built. She also talked about how they brought singing lessons to area schools, by purchasing song books and paying for a singing instructor. In the early seventies, Rosalie put forth a motion, seconded by Isabel Tucker, to form a seniors club for the community. The result was the Anstruther-Chandos-Burliegh Seniors Club, which today is known as ABC Seniors and has over 100 members. Rosalie never dreamed that the club would grow so big.

In May 2007, Rosalie McColl was honoured by Queen Elizabeth II for 65 years of dedicated service to the Women's Institute. This month, she is celebrating her 89^th birthday. Rosalie's achievements have been many, and her generosity and dedication has benefited everyone in the community.

Apsley
Scouting

Did you know that Scouting has been an active presence in the Apsley area for over 33 years? With countless celebrations underway to commemorate 100 years of Scouting, we look back on the organization’s beginning and the part it’s played in our own community. Scouting was begun in England in 1907 by Lord Baden Powell. Lord B.P. wanted to teach survival skills, independence and confidence to young boys. During the First World War, Lord B.P’s Scouts ran errands and delivered messages. Scouting is based on three principles: duty to God, duty to others, duty to self.

Today there is Scouting in over 200 countries. There are five major sections: Beavers (age 5-7), Cubs (age 8-10), Scouts (age11-14), Venturers (age14-17), Rovers (age18 and up). All sections are now co-ed. Scouting sections earn badges, go camping, hiking, canoeing and kayaking. Our groups have traveled to Ottawa, Hamilton, as well as our local camps in Peterborough, Norwood and Coe Hill. As I look through our archives and photos, dating back to 1973, I see many familiar faces including Mary McCarthy, Jude Lean, Gloria and Brian Barnes, Fred Bagshaw, Teresa McIntosh, Bruce Manning, Sonia Harrison, Eileen Westhaver, and many more adults. Many youth have graduated up through the sections, too.

As a group we’ve participated in many community events over the years such as parades, tree planting, helping seniors, Lions Park clean up and gathering canned goods for the local Food Bank. Sadly, over the last few years we’ve had a decline in the number of youth as well as leaders. We face another obstacle, in that our loyal Cub Leader Kathryn Daniels has moved away.

Will Scouting in Apsley become extinct? We’re working hard to continue to ensure that the youth of this community gain the experience and opportunity for growth that Scouting provides.

If you or anyone you know is interested in helping out this worthwhile youth organization PLEASE contact: Shelley McColl 656-1062, Smccoll68@hotmail.com or Tammy Pennell 656-2242, traynsford@hotmail.com.
