Because of the seclusion the cemetery is used as a playground, smoking room, drinking area and camping spot. None of these activities are suitable for a place of burial; it shows neither respect nor honour for the deceased loved ones, or the living that visit the graves. Hooligans are wrecking and vandalizing the cemetery. This is not an isolated case it happens constantly especially during school vacations, when, boredom sets in. Aside from the disrespect there is also a physical danger involved. I am hoping that no personal injury will befall these young persons. This is an old cemetery with old gravestones and I am asking all parents for help in preventing an accident. Parents please teach your children about respecting the cemetery, tell them this is not a playground, and point out the dangers.
I have repeatedly asked
some of the recent troublemakers to leave but I need your help in this
willful destruction of an historic cemetery. |

In 2003, Apsley Central School was designated as "prohibitive to repair". This meant officials had decided it would be more costly to repair than to rebuild the school. In winter 2004, Kawartha Pine Ridge School Board began public consultations as part of the process for making decisions about school closures. The Apsley School Renewal Committee went to work. It monitored school board minutes and announcements, posted notices and telephoned community members, wrote letters to elected officials and government bodies, contacted government personnel, and obtained municipal council's support. We needed our school and it was critical that it remain here. Our community rallied! Many of you may remember how we packed our own school's gym! The school board consultation in Lakefield about Young's Point, Buckhorn and Apsley schools was reported to have had at least 2/3 of its audience from Apsley. If the school was to be rebuilt, it made good sense to attach a child care facility at the same time. Two needs assessments proved that there was both interest and need for a registered facility. It was therefore, with a good deal of anxiety and anticipation that we went to the school board's public information meeting on January 22, 2007. Ms. Sherry Summersides, Associate Director of Education, announced that they are recommending that Apsley Central School be rebuilt, to be completed by the fall of 2008. Although there still are a few hoops, Apsley School is at the top of the list in the board's capital plan, to be submitted to the trustees and then to the Ministry of Education.
We therefore thank the
community for its unflinching support --- and the members of the Apsley
School Renewal Committee for their persistent efforts: Carolyn Amyotte,
Heather Brooks-Hill, Sharon Hainer, Pat Hoffman, Robin Miszuk, and Marlene
White. |

The North Kawartha Food Bank held its Annual General Meeting on January 24, 2007. An election of officers was held for the year 2007 with the following results; Pat Quast will stand for chair, Bob Harvey, Treasurer. Sally Rand, Secretary. Shirley Shaver, Food co-ordinator. Jackie Strong, fundraising co-ordinator. Nancy Goodson, promotions co-ordinator. Daphne Ingram, volunteer co-ordinator. The food bank has seen a 15% increase over the last year and it seems that this will be the trend as our clients seem to struggle more every year to make ends meet. This is why we at the Food Bank work very hard to try and help those in need. If we can be of assistance to you, come and see us at 175 Burleigh St. Apsley. Our food bank hours are Tues. 10-12 and Fri. 10 - 12. Phone # 656-1748 In an emergency call 656-3000 for food or information.
A special thank to all for
your generosity in helping us to help those in need. Sincerely, Pat Quast |

My wife & I went to breakfast at a restaurant where the "seniors' special" was two eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast for $1.99. "Sounds good," my wife said. "But I don't want the eggs." "Then I'll have to charge you two dollars and forty-nine cents because you're ordering a la carte," the waitress warned her. You mean I'd have to pay for not taking the eggs?" my wife asked incredulously. "YES!!" "I'll take the special then." "How do you want your eggs?" "Raw and in the shell," my wife replied. She took the two eggs home.
