TURKEY VULTURES Bird migration is in full swing and will continue even into December as one species after another seeks warmer places to spend the winter. Turkey Vultures are one of the largest migrants - nearly eagle-sized, with a wing-spread of 6 feet. They are easily recognized, soaring on two-toned blackish wings which they hold in a V, tilting unsteadily from side to side, experts in riding the air currents to save their energy. These scavengers are very valuable birds because they clean up disease-carrying carrion. Eating carrion can be a messy affair but Turkey Vultures have adapted by having featherless, small heads. Their fossil remains date back millions of years so they are certainly doing something right! They find their food using their extraordinarily-sharp senses of sight and smell. When one Turkey Vulture begins to descend, others from beyond the range of human vision, follow suit, knowing that food has been found. At night, they prefer communal roosts, up to several hundred birds and I came upon one of these at Jack Lake during a Spring migration - an eerie sight! They do not build nests but find sheltered spots - cliff edges, hollow logs, abandoned buildings - where they lay 1-3 eggs. The parents feed the young only 2-3 times a day, regurgitating food from their large crops. Although they look like turkeys, they are a very different, interesting bird and have their special place in the scheme of things. |

I found this old picture today. These boys worked
on Hwy 28, Camp # 5 a couple of miles south of the village of Apsley. They
were from Peterborough and Toronto. I, John Wallbridge worked and lived in
Apsley from 1933 to 1939 when I went to Timmins and worked at the mines,
then to merchant Marines for 3 years.
Married to Andy Young’s oldest daughter Evelyn who worked for Miss Brand at the Red Cross hospital. Evelyn is in Fairhaven, I expect to be there soon. Yours truly, John Wallbridge (standing second guy from the right) Walk/Run for the Cure
October 1, 2005
Pictured above is Lindsay Tucker, age 12, grand-daughter of Alice & Bill Liberty and Glen & Gail Tucker having 13 inches of her golden locks cut off by Pat Quast. This hair will be made into a hairpiece for a cancer patient who has lost their hair due to Chemo and radiation treatment. Just a reminder that on Saturday, October 1, 2005 the "Women of Apsley" will be doing the C.I.B.C. WALK/RUN FOR THE CURE. I'm sure everyone has family, friends, neighbours or co-workers who have lost someone dear to breast cancer or are a survivor of this dreaded disease. Let's support the walkers on this day and when asked for a donation, PLEASE give from your hearts. |
