What a Parade…
What a Committee…

By Arnie Brown

On Canada Day both Burleigh and Wellington Streets were fully lined with people of all ages and even some pets to celebrate this great nations birthday.  The pipe bands, floats, cars, bicycles, trucks and bathtubs were outstanding.  The Firefly band played brilliantly in the banquet hall.

Darlene Doxsee has been involved tirelessly with this event since 1992, when the parade began as a Chamber of Commerce project.  The Apsley lion’s were involved form 1997 through 2000.  The beautification committee has had full responsibility for this event from 2000 to the present; with the Lion’s generously funding the much needed liability insurance.

Funds to present this event held by the committee have been raised by Jeanie Crowe’s Kawartha Kickers through fundraising dinners and the Christmas turkey roll.

The beautification committee members are Darlene Doxsee (chair), Rose Tucker (treasurer), Brenda Patterson (secretary), and newer members Meryl Post and Uno Warner.

In addition to rallying floats, and parade organization this committee funded the lovely hydro pole flags, and the four distinctive “Welcome to Apsley” signs, located at the entrances to the Village.

The purpose of this note is to recognize the wonderful contribution the Beautification Committee has made to Apsley, and to thanks the committee for their continuing good work.

Thank you and keep up the great work!

An Update on our Jayde

The following is an update on the progress of the ‘Jayde Best and Family’ that this community has so graciously supported physically, emotionally, spiritually and last but not least, FINANCIALLY since April, 13th - 2005.  For those of you who may not know, Jayde is our 2-½ yr. old granddaughter who was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour, what a shock!!!  My son and his wife packed up or I should say, ran with their family to Sick Kids Hospital and have been there ever since, afraid to come back home to live in case their little girl takes yet another turn for the worse, as she has done so many times before just when they thought (and the doctors also) they would be able to finally come home and have Jayde finish her treatment from Peterborough.

During this time, Jayde has been mostly ill since her surgery which removed 90% of the tumour but had to have chemotherapy to handle the rest, but after the first round of chemo, she got so ill and contracted a blood fungus which permeated every part of her body imaginable.  They had to stop the chemo and it took until now to get her strong enough to start it again, only this time they ‘re giving her a much weaker dose in hopes that it will be enough to arrest the tumour.  They thought they could come home to do this treatment but Peterborough Hospital refused her because the anti-fungal treatment is too expensive.  So now it’s time to re-introduce the stem cells, which they extracted from her 2 months ago.  The infusion doesn’t take long but because of the high possibility of further infection, she will be in isolation for the next 2 – 4 months.  Only the parents will be permitted to see her.

Please keep on praying and believing that your love and support has meant that this family has been together through all of this and could not have made it without you and that God has used many resources to bring about this miracle.  On behalf of Wayde, Brandee, Allan, Brittany, Ryan, and Jayde and of course myself and my husband, thank you and God bless you and yours.

With much love and prayers,
Debbie & Fred Best and Family

LOTS  OF  SMILES WHEN  FUNDRAISING  FOR  THE  MEDICAL  CENTRE

by Cal Taillefer

The recent 5K run/walk was a major success (see separate article on page 6 for details), bringing in over $2,500.  Many thanks to Neil Longhurst and his terrific committee who organized the event and secured sponsors.  Along with this, entrepreneur Carmen Debono participated and also sold gingerbread cookies in the shape of running shoes!  A special thanks to Dorothy and Wayne Farquhar who participated but also decided to get personal sponsors.  With this, they raised an additional $1,300.  Nice going folks.

As you clean out your cottages/homes from the summer collection of bottles, be aware that if you take the beer bottles to Watson's Gas, they will let you donate those refunds to the Health Centre.  Please consider doing this.  Thanks, in advance.

With all of your efforts, big and small---they all add up, and to this point we have $230,000.  Not bad for a small community and being only half way through.  Thanks to a great bunch of people.  By the way, if you have noticed all the activity around the Health Centre, it is because we are nearing the end of construction:  three more weeks should do it!
