BLAST OFF! By Kylie Hainer
Listen to this! Last night at 8:00 PM (August 12th) in Apsley rockets took off into space! Just joking!! Well not really. In the last six weeks 9 kids went to the library and built our own rockets. With the help from Bryan Pilon and Mrs. Jeff we learned everything and more about rockets. Bryan Pilon grew up in Apsley and went to Apsley Central Public School. He went onto Carlton University and now has a bachelor of engineering degree. He is now working on his master of science (my favorite subject) in aerospace engineering. He wanted to give something back to his community. He did that and more with a big bang. We were able to learn about how rockets work, gas that propels them and the different parts needed in order to make them work. He taught us by bringing his own modeling kit, powerpoint presentations and his own personal experiences. It was a great experience and we all enjoyed it. A big blast off!! to Bryan and his co-pilot Mrs. Jeff. From Kyle Johnson, Jordan West, Morgan Currie, Taylor Jeff, Justin Jeff, John Trotter, Michael Ranier, Kylie Hainer, Gerry Trotter.
At Back: Bryan Pilon, and Mrs. Diane

“Yes, We’re Proud!”
By Sandy Zimmerman
Why? Well, with more than 300 quilts on display,
Naomi Wilson’s queen-size quilt won the President’s Award for large quilts
in the recent Buckhorn and Area Quilter’s Guild International Exhibition.
Congratulations, Naomi! What’s this quilt like? Visit Apsley Voice’s website (click on this link: Amazing Quilt) to see for yourself. The colors are vibrant. The pattern is unassumingly complex. The precision is remarkable – lines and lines of tiny hand sewn stitches less than 1/8 inch each. These stitches form small ovals, triangles, squares - all finely tuned to complement the pattern of small 2 1/2 inch squares of cloth. The background alone consists of 17 different hues of ivory, carefully placed so that the eye is aware only of a pleasing setting for the other colours. There are 1360 squares of cloth and 32 different fabrics in the spread. She admits to enjoying the whole process. As evidence for this statement, one need look no further than the intricacy of the hand quilting, which alone took more than 200 hours. While admiring her grandmother’s quilting, Naomi, absorbed with raising a family of 8 and working at the family business, had no time. However, Naomi remembered her interest and took up quilting about 14 or 15 years ago. She has obviously mastered the skills superbly. She proceeds with an artist’s sensitivity to colour and pattern. (She also works in acrylics and watercolour.) When asked if she works for commission or sells, she replied with a very emphatic "no"! However, she laughingly commented that she has completed at least one or two quilts for each child and crib quilts for most of her grandchildren (15-20). A grandson, soon to be married, preferred a quilt to money. If she gave them money, he thought, it would only disappear. So yet another unique quilt is being planned! |
