| MY BEAUTIFUL COMMUNITY My favourite place to be, is my community. When I wake up I can hear the cars bounce on the rough roads While the sun is gently rising. When it finally comes up I dash out the door And I can hear all the birds Chirping peacefully in the daylight sky, Like the sun singing a spring day song. When my pool is open I can see the sun make everything sparkle in the daylight sky. My favourite place to be is in my community. © 2004 Brady T. Richardson About the Author — Brady T. Richardson By Granddad Barrie P. Richardson
Brady was about 30 minutes old on July 8, 1993 when the
attending cardiologist detected a failure of his heart. He was rushed
to Sick Children's Hospital and operated on to discover that he had been
born with literally half a heart. No Left ventricle, no tricuspid valve
and no function in the Left Vena Cava. 20 years earlier and Brady would
be only a fleeting memory. He has had three MAJOR operations to reconstruct his heart and he now functions like any other boy. Boisterous, inventive and wildly imaginative. He is allowed to play soccer, hockey, lacrosse and basketball, which he does with an intensity of a Wendel Clark. He loves the Leafs, his Game-boy and Jack Lake fishing in about that order. He is a remarkably gutsy little guy, with a smile at all times, and he carries a torch for his big sister as big as Miss Liberty’s Flame. When I discovered this monologue at his home, I was stunned. Brady produces surprises that should not surprise us anymore. IN THE VILLAGE
Away from big cities and urbanity trapped Are villages, hamlets whose people adapt To the rainbow of lifestyles the same only smaller Embraced by acceptance of the long, short and taller The woodsman the artist the builder adhere To a code of regard and a wise laissez-faire. The hardworking plowman, the retired old gent The ladies committees are signs of intent To gather, be friendly to join in events That give the town comfort in broad tolerance In each case we’re people who share a locale Our faults are forgotten our differences pall Without every member who elects to subscribe To acceptance and kindness we’d not have a tribe. The village is pattern for that much larger theme That a country could follow and not be extreme To all live together, our differences and traits Sublimated, forgotten, perhaps, by pretense But such acting’s effective, makes life less intense To know where we go that a welcome abides A village or hamlet to the soul well provides The faith in society and more favorable fates. © 2004 Barrie P. Second Annual “Links for Literacy”
A Success The monsoon clouds parted for the sun to shine on the 2nd Annual “Links for Literacy” Golf Classic helping to raise over $4500.00 for the N. K. Library & Learning Centre. The tournament, held Saturday, July 24th at Marvel Rapids, attracted 47 golfers for a day of fun, food and great prizes. The Osbornes and the rest of the staff at Marvel Rapids worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the day. The shiny 2004 Buick Century from Boyer Pontiac Buick was an amazing incentive, however a hole-in-one on the 7th hole proved elusive again this year. Community support was overwhelming.
Participants took part in a number of contests taking place throughout the day. Thank you to all who participated and congratulations to all the winners, we hope to see you again next year. Once again, the Library and Leaning Centre thanks all who made the day a wonderful success. We invite you to visit us at 175 Burleigh Street in Apsley, see the some more photographs from the tournament and a list of winners, and make use of the many resources we offer.
