| Living With Black Bears in Ontario by Bill Dulmage
(L-R) Bill Dulmage, Shannon Shepherd and
Ian McConnel.
On Monday July 21st Shannon Shepherd, a Bear Technician with the Minden Area Office of the MNR (Ministry of Natural Resources) was at the Community Centre in Apsley for a very interesting and informative presentation about nuisance bears. Shannon's power point presentation included facts about black bears, how bears can become a nuisance, how to prevent nuisance bear problems, what to do if you encounter a bear unexpectedly and finally how to recognize and respond to a potentially dangerous encounter. I particularly enjoyed a portion of her presentation which included a series of recorded sounds made by bears under differing circumstances such as a frightened cub bawling for its mother, a contented cub purring "like a kitten" (although I never heard a kitten make anything close to that particular sound), a startled bear that is telling you that you are too close and to "back off" a mother bear "communicating" with cubs, and a bear that is in trouble and knows it. Shannon concluded her presentation with a question and answer period from the audience. The presentation was sponsored by the Community Policing Committee, Roy Allen and the Glen Alda Seniors and the Township of North Kawartha who gave us use of the Community Centre for the evening. Ian McConnel, Chair of Community Policing thanked Shannon for her excellent presentation. Thank you to everyone involved. |

With the sound of running water and birds singing in the trees, this was a very inspirational setting. Roger Crosby and Doug Reynolds provided Music for the singing of the hymns.
