Where were you when the Lights went out?

by Perge

On Aug 14th 2003 at precisely 4:11 pm the electrical power when out in most of Ontario and the North Eastern States.  Almost everyone who reads this article has been affected one way or another by this blackout. However there are a few stories that are worth repeating.

The time of the blackout was reported after the fact, but I know that this time was very accurate. You see my brother was viewing the Women’s tennis match in Toronto and had a call by  nature. As soon as the blackout occurred, his cell phone rang which recorded the exact time of the power failure.

Now just stop and ask yourself, ‘where were you when the lights went out?’ This will be the question that will get answered by many people. Perhaps you were in the car going home from work or at home, preparing dinner, or just enjoying nature. This power failure made us all realize that we are all very dependent on electricity. After the power failure, there where many people looking for ways in which they could prepare for the next power outage, by filling their gas tank, buying candles, or stocking up with ice.

Truthfully, I was envious of the stories that many people had of the quiet times that they spent with family or friends talking or trying to find Mars in the sky. Many people were phoning into radio stations reporting that they were able to spend some quality times with friends and loved one while the power was out and they did not have TV for entertainment.

Well let’s not wait until there is another power blackout to simply just gaze at the stars and enjoy the quiet times. So, in this busy world, where everyone is buzzing around in their cars going from one event to the next, talking on their cell phones, communicating by Blackberries and pagers, let’s remember that it is important to take the time to enjoy time with our families and our wonderful communities like North Kawartha where we can really sit back and enjoy the finer things in life, like nature.
