Arnie Brown announces his candidacy for Councilor at Large for North Kawartha Township.
Arnie Brown announced today his candidacy for Councilor at Large.
Arnie represents the 4'th generation of Browns in Apsley. His education
began in the old Fair Grounds school & later Apsley Central School.
A hockey player in 1958 he continued his scholastic and hockey education
at St. Michael's College in Toronto & the Universities of Ottawa &
Simon Fraser. Next he entered the NHL playing for the Rangers,
Red Wings & Atlanta Flames. Then held the position of Assistant
Coach of the Canucks. He retired from the NHL in 1978. Then
he spent 20+ years in sales positions. Arnie retired in April
2000 and with his wife Sandra has a permanent residence on the Mt. Julian
Viamede Road in Woodview.
Arnie is ready to work with all North Kawartha
taxpayers so that they have full and proper representation on all the issues
before Council. According to Arnie "In sports and at Council
the important thing is to have a strong team. I think I can contribute to
the community by listening to people in a down to earth manner and then make
their concerns heard at Council." Please support Arnie for the position of Councilor
at Large so that together, as a strong team, we are ready to face the challenges
that lie ahead.
Jim Whelan announces his candidacy for the office of Reeve of North Kawartha Township.
Jim Whelan former Deputy Reeve of Burleigh-Anstruther Township,
declares his candidacy for Reeve in the Township of North Kawartha. “Over
the past year a great number of people have asked me to consider running,”
says Mr. Whelan. “People are looking for a more open approach to the
decisions being made by all levels of Government.” In the past few
years Jim has seen people becoming frustrated with decisions made in secret
and levels of government blaming each other for lost services and increased
user fees. Jim’s vision is to have a Council that works in co-operation
with the public and other levels of government. Whelan said that he discussed
these issues with Darla-Marie, his wife and she felt that with his experience
and consultative approach to decision-making, he could help make a positive
difference to the community. For example while Jim was Deputy Reeve he chaired
a committee that held open meetings with the public and Fire Department which
resulted in the building of the new Fire Hall and Community Centre on Northeys
Bay Road. Jim is a strong believer that “decisions made behind closed doors
are decisions made in the dark: the public can't see in and the decision
makers can't see out.” As President (retired) of the successful Peterborough
Carpetland and Whelan’s Carpetland (Bridgenorth) Jim is also concerned about
and well qualified to assist local economic development. A result of his
business acumen he believes that at the heart of any well run Council is
sound fiscal management. Whelan has been active in the community over the
past few years as President of the Anstruther Lake Cottager’s association.
I'm in touch with the current issues some of which were issues when “I was
Deputy Reeve and will still be issues in twenty more years because they are
long term concerns: ambulance, fire, healthcare, roads, waste sites, the
Official Plan and Comprehensive Zoning By-Laws.” |
Sandy Zimmerman announces her candidacy for the office of Councilor at Large.
Sandy Zimmerman- – For Councilor
at Large
Why am I running for Council? I believe in this community and its future. I care for its unique character and hear its concerns: obtaining adequate health care once the good doctor retires; expanding the narrow tax base while maintaining the environment; meeting the new clean water regulations; providing worthwhile, attractive activities for teens – to name just a few. These are not easy times – or instantly solved problems. However, they are issues for which solutions are possible. Just one sample: when this area gets broadband width connectivity, local web-based businesses become viable. With good marketing and promotion, young families reluctant to raise their children in larger centres will move to a rural area like North Kawartha. The environment remains intact, businesses and services are created to satisfy the growing population, and the tax base expands. Your council needs imaginative, progressive, caring, intelligent and thoughtful people who can work collaboratively. I have had the privilege of working with Janice Griffith and believe we are the beginning of an excellent team! But Who Am I? I am a: permanent resident, living in North Kawartha for 6 ½ years; wife – to Joe MacNab for 40 years; mother – to 3 grown, independent daughters; educator – pre-school, elementary and secondary school teacher; adult literacy supervisor and tutor, currently at Trent Valley Literacy Association; educational/social researcher – an interest inherited from my late father and developed in postgraduate courses; gardener – miraculous to see what results from a minute seed! amateur musician – violist in the Peterborough Symphony; pianist; student – in higher education until surprisingly, it resulted in postgraduate degrees; soon to begin on-line studies; volunteer – tutor; member & past chair of Library Board; chair of Learning Centre Committee; involved in social plan & community economic development meetings. If you would like to talk, please call (656-2745) or e-mail: sanjoe@sympatico.ca. |
