On the Watch

by June Hitchcox  Hitchcox, June

EAGLES
It is satisfying to be able to identify birds and in this season of migration, many are heading south. Of these, few are huge so that is a good place to start. Last month’s article dealt with Turkey Vultures, wings held in a V (dihedral), tilting unsteadily from side to side as they ride the wind currents. The two Eagle species in our area are even larger, with wing-spreads of up to 71/2 feet – the Golden Eagle and the Bald Eagle.

Golden Eagle
Golden Eagle

Eagles, too, conserve energy by gliding on the wind but hold their wings flat out – the Golden sometimes in a slight dihedral. For an adult Bald Eagle, look for a white head, neck and tail on a black body. The rarer Golden is all brown but easily confused with an immature Bald that has similar colouring until it is about 4 years old. Both species will eat any meat in bad times but Golden Eagles prefer to hunt small mammals.

Balled Eagle
Bald Eagle

Bald Eagles, more common here year-round, build huge stick nests, close to water, in a tree, usually up to 100 feet off the ground and are primarily fish eaters. Both species are often seen about mid October in our area as they migrate through. Those seen late November will over-winter here, feeding on the relative abundance of deer carcasses. Turkey Vultures and Eagles- not too difficult to identify, even from quite a distance.
