Apsley Tennis Player Wins Canadian Championship

Janice Longhurst (pictured right), a summer Chandos Lake resident, teamed with Frances Critchley of Dundas to win the Canadian Tennis Championship in Women's Over 50 Doubles, played at Toronto Granite Club in August. The pair defeated Christa Cameron and Mary Bowen of Ottawa, 6-4, 6-2, in the final. Longhurst also reached the final of the Women's Singles, losing to Critchley. These results qualify her for the Canadian Senior Team that will compete in the World Senior tournament in Perth, Australia, next March.
The national win capped a strong season for Longhurst. In June, she won the Ontario Masters Mixed Doubles Championship with Hanni Ayoub of Toronto, including a win over a pair of former Canadian #1's, Keith Carpenter and Faye Urban Mlacak. In May, she won three straight matches to lead the Canadian International Club Senior Women to a Gengler Cup win over the US in New York. A certified tennis pro in both Canada and the US, she taught tennis part-time at Peterborough's Quaker Tennis Club this summer, and will return to Florida in October for the winter and to prepare for Australia.

The "race", an outdoor triathlon adventure rather than a competitive race, will take place at secret locations in the North Kawartha region to be divulged at the race. It is open to solo competitors as well as to teams of two or four.
Inquirers may mail or visit Peterborough & the Kawartha Tourism, 175 George St. North, Peterborough K9J 3G6; FAX at 705-742-2494; net at www.stormthetrent.com; or email at info@thekawarthas.net or www.paluski.com.
