By Katie Jackson
The 7th Annual Ham Supper and Silent Auction
fundraiser, which was held Thurs Aug 26th, was a great success.
Changing the evening to a weekday seemed to improve attendance.
The North Kawartha Library Board and staff wishes to thank the Anglican
Woman's Guild for the delicious food they prepared, The Township
of North Kawartha for the use of the hall, everyone who contributed
the pies and desserts and all the volunteers who helped to make
our night a success, which raised $2,389. Thank you to everyone
who graciously donated items for our silent auction. Also, big thank
you to our community for their support.

SNAPSHOT ITALY 1944 - The Forgotton Front
By Bill Johnston
Our tank had taken a direct hit and ceased to be operational.
I was sent to drive the mechanics tank. This tank followed behind
the battle in case of breakdowns and then we proceeded back to our
new command post, a mine laden area, a real hot spot, which was
undergoing heavy shelling; In one explosion an assault troop was
nearly wiped out ( 19 out of 20 were either killed or wounded in
one explosion ).
As we approached the building an officer, standing
in the doorway was pointing to our parking spot. Then as we moved
in there was a heavy explosion. As I tried to gather my faculties
I notice the officer has disappeared. I glance down at the tank
floor. There is a huge bulge upwards. The generator that had been
there now sat on top of the transmission. We were carrying over
100 gallons of fuel and a full compliment of ammunition. We bail
out in case of fire.
I look around and 400 to 500 lbs of the tank's
suspension lies 40 feet away. We had driven over a powerful mine.
The officer has reappeared in the doorway after being blown to the
back of the house, deaf, but otherwise unharmed. We edge around
to the back of the tank and walk out on our tread marks very, very
carefully. Yes, I was scared!!!
