Fail to Remain Collision Involving ATV
A Whitby man and his two children are very fortunate to have received only minimal injuries after they were struck by a car while riding on an ATV in North Kawartha Township. Just before 6:00PM on Sunday, August 22nd.
41 year old Mark Anderson, and his two children (ages 5 and 9) were riding on a 2001 Polaris ATV when they crested a hill on Fire Route # 61 off Anstruther Lake Road. Anderson tried to avoid a collision with an oncoming car however a head-on collision resulted, and on impact the Andersons' went over the ATV's windshield landing on the hood and windshield of the oncoming car. The driver of the red, un-plated car reversed and left the scene. The driver of the fleeing car was in collision with two other cars before the car was abandoned on Anstruther Lake Road and the two occupants fled on foot. The Canine Unit was called in to assist in the ground search for the suspects however they managed to avoid apprehension for now.
Aggressive Drivers on Highway #28
On his way to the Apsley Voice appreciation party, Const. LaFreniere - operating a plain, unmarked police cruiser - was travelling northbound on Highway #28 in North Kawartha Township south of Apsley when he observed two other northbound cars travelling at 140 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone. Const. LaFreniere followed these cars northbound where he observed they were driving aggressively with improper passing, and with the assistance of a Bancroft O.P.P. cruiser equipped with radar both the cars were stopped resulting in a charge for both drivers.

North Kawartha Financial Statement
Richard Steiginga, Charterd Accountant with Collins
Barrow Chartered Accountants, presented the highlights of the 2003
financial statement. He stated that the township is in "good financial
shape" and has appropriate funds to handle future obligations. A good
example is the $1.6 million liability potential costs to close and
maintain closed dumpsites. These costs are due to provincial requirements
for leachate testing and possible environmental impacts over a 25year
period after the dumps are closed. The Township has a landfill reserve
of $276,000. Mr. Steiginga stated that this is an appropriate amount
and the township should be able to avoid any "financial surprises"
that would cause a "tax increase spike". He concluded by thanking
the staff for their cooperation during the annual audit.
Dangerous Location on Highway 28
Council has become aware of a dangerous location
on Highway 28 just north of the Eels Creek park at the top of the
hill. There is speculation that an oil-type substance is rising to
the surface of the asphalt and rain causes the surface to become slippery.
Numerous accidents have occurred. The Ministry of Transportation has
put sand on the road and is investigation the situation. Council will
be advising Community Policing of the situation and will be asking
the Ministry of Transportation and the OPP to comment on this matter.
Changes to the Trash Pick-up Schedule
Council approved changes to
the pick-up schedule on some of the roads in the Anstruther Lake area.
The contractor requested that the trash pick-up be on Monday instead
of Tuesday on these roads to reduce the size of the route on Tuesdays.
Council likes the concept of having trash and recyclables picked up
on the same day and will discuss this with the contractor for other
locations.
Security Catches Dump Site Offenders
Five offenders were
caught attempting to leave garbage at the closed dump gates. Their
names were recorded and they agreed to take their trash away with
them. |
