REMEMBERANCE DAY

WWI Soldiers
Photo of  WW1 soldiers contributed by author Bill Johnston

Again we approach November 11th, to remember those who have died on the battlefields and those who lived through the war only to die from the after effects. We hoped to make peace by going to war. In the North West corner of Europe it has been successful for 64 years and in the Pacific the Japanese have been allied with the  Americans for a similar length of time.

Now we approach a new phase, where our Peace Keeping Forces have their hands tied by the rules of engagement laid down by the United Nations. Think of the problems encountered by our own generals, McKenzie and D’Allaire  Our  soldiers today die trying to enforce peace. Let us remember them along with our other war veterans.

Apsley Lions Club
by Joan Forsyth

The 2003 Boat and Motor draw was a great success, thanks to the diligence of our ticket sellers and the support of  our residents and summer visitors.

The draw was made at the Lions bingo in the Apsley Centre on August 27, 2003.  The winner of the 2003 Boat, Motor & Trailer was Ticket #029 - Steve Sexton of Markham.  2nd prize, the beautifully crafted Windmill, was ticket # 1635 held by Shan Lee of Orono.  3rd prize, the Lighthouse, was won by ticket #178 - Ray Hagerman of Jacks Lake.  Congratulations to all our winners!  Thanks to Tucker Marine for supplying that great little boat and to Lion Tony Assinck for making the Windmill and Lighthouse.  It is truly appreciated.

Thanks to everyone for your continued support of the Apsley Lions projects.   The funds raised will be used to support community projects.

Why not drop in and enjoy a social evening of Bingo at the Apsley Centre on Wednesday night. Games begin at 7:30 PM

See you there!

A Love Story

Austin and Hazel Wease

On August 27th, 1938, Austin Wease received the best birthday present ever. He married a lovely girl named Hazel Post. They met as children in a one-room school which is now the Community Centre. Hazel and Austin live an exemplarily life in Glen Alda on their family farm, where they raised a family of four. Austin keeps active by gardening and taking care of his property, including tapping the maple trees and boiling down the sap to syrup. Hazel gives her family and friends pickles and preserves that she makes with vegetables from her garden. She is an amazing quilter, completing several quilts a year. She is a valued member of the Sewing  Circle. Martha Stewart has nothing on this wonder woman. The Weases' are still active in
their church and community. They meet with other seniors twice a month. They are still in love after all these years and it is a real treat to know them.

Owenbrook Ladies Golf League

Another Golf Season is drawing to a close. On Aug 28th we had our official closing game. Prizes were given for the most improved scores on the ringer board and the girls very kindly honour me with two lovely gifts. I will cherish them forever. We then went to  "Winnifreds" for lunch. (They even paid for my lunch “Thank You”.)

Since 1997, I have had the pleasure of organizing this league. Each  year the season opened with a "Get Acquainted Luncheon” followed by regular games played each Thursday. Every 4th  Thursday we played a "FUN GAME", had lunch and enjoyed a Social Get-Together.

Now it is time for me to step down and Dorothy Jordison and Elaine Reddick have agreed to carry on.

I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the help and support they gave me during the last 7 years. I enjoyed every minute of it and I look forward to joining you as long as I am able to play.
