The school year has begun once again and our committee has been hard at work fundraising this past spring & summer.  Although our Spring Perennial Plant sale was held in a downpour, it was a terrific success.  We raised $1,500.  Thanks to the volunteers & everyone who donated and purchased plants.
Our Golf Tournament at Marvel Rapids raised $2,200 towards our new playground.  We would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to Gord, Helen, Doug & Tracey at Marvel Rapids Golf Course who hosted our Golf Tournament.  Everyone who came out to the tournament ogled the 9th-hole, hole-in-one prize, a beautiful Bennington Pontoon Boat generously donated by Greg, Penny, Denver & Colt Tucker of Tucker’s Marine.  Donating the pontoon boat for the Playground Golf Tournament was very kind and it greatly elevated the stakes for the tournament.  Thank you to all the businesses in town that kindly donated the prizes for our placing teams & contests.  We truly appreciate the strong sense of community our sponsors have demonstrated.  Thanks also to Warren & Mary-Lou for their kind help.     We are pleased to announce that the Lions will be organizing the 4th Annual Lasagna Dinner at the Apsley Community Centre, Live & Silent Auction with the proceeds going towards the playground.  The Lasagna Dinner will be held Saturday, October 18th, 2003.  Mark your calendar and be sure to get your tickets early because last year was a sellout!

Balanced Day @ School

by Janet Mc Dougall

Students and staff at Apsley Central are looking forward to another great school year.  Staff and students are trying out a new daily schedule call the Balanced Day.  Our beginning and end times are much the same as always but the middle of the day is very different.  We now have two nutrition breaks throughout the day.  Break One is from 10:30 to 11:10 and Break Two is from 12:50 to 1:30.  The first 20 minutes in each break period is for staff and students to have a bite to eat.  The last 20 minutes is for outdoor recreation.  Dividing the day in this way helps to balance instruction time and break times.  Students are encouraged to eat healthy snacks during both breaks, avoiding foods high in sugar and fat.  Research suggests that this type of scheduling will help students maintain concentration throughout the day, promoting good learning.  This schedule is a trial project for this school year.  Toward the end of the year, students, parents and staff will be asked to comment on this new type of school day schedule.  These responses will determine whether we return to the traditional schedule or maintain this new Balanced Day.

ABC Seniors

by Dianne Langille

The trip to Peterboro, Aug 6th, included the Liftlock Cruise and Festival of Lights. After a full day of activities, the weather cleared for a fine evening to enjoy: A Canadian Tribute to Glenn Miller”. We are inquiring about other outings, but your preferences and suggestions would be welcomed.

In August, Pres. Fred and Vice Pres Sally represented the club at the U.S.C.O. convention in Toronto. They found the conference very informative. Details of the conference and list of resolutions have been prepared in a report by Sally.

The may seem a little early, but, not really! Our Annual Christmas Dinner is scheduled for Dec. 2nd.  We will be requesting attendance acknowledgements in Nov. Prior to this, though, let us not forget the Xmas Bazaar, Nov 1st. Tickets for the lovely prizes are going quickly, and we are looking forward to another successful event

After Labour Day, our regular Tues. meetings have resumed, and of course, Line Dancing with Alice Liberty is underway, Wed.@ 1- 3.30 pm at the Community Centre Come Join us!

A Mood called November
Barrie P. Richardson
lake in fall
The Red and Gold October leaves are gone,
The burnishing sun of day and the crisp flavour of night air
No longer gives the day delight
The heavens offer naught but gloomy sky,
A plate of iron floats where blue waters used to lie.

In the air, snow flakes, sent as harbingers of winter, fall
To test the ground for winter’s hospitality
They melt away but have sent the their call
To us and to the sky that snow’s time will soon
Accommodate the winter whose blanket purifies the leaden pall

To us this time is meant to prove
That our stern stuff ignores the loss of summer’s glow,
That chill by day and night somehow conspire
To make our spirits more worthy, while
We deceive our comforts with hearth and glowing fire

We add more garb and burn more fuel to
Replicate the warmth that fled when summer waned
We claim, we hope that beauty reigns in slate grey skies,
Skeletal trees and waters steel-colour stained

We watched as birds (whose minds we say are small)
Formed wiser flocks and flew to warmer climes
They now rest and fly in lush surrounds
While we endure winter’s hostile times

November’s time is not a pleasure sought
We live here, such choice is but ours to face
We’re here for fate of birth and life
To surmount the cold and ice of winter strife.

No-one has to love November
It is not a time but a surly mood
It tells us of late morns and early nights
Of mists and snows yet to fall
We long for a return to spring’s delight
While enduring November and winter’s chill.

November, not a month, but a Mood.
