ATV’s Are Fun – In Their Place As we see land emerge from all that snow, All Terrain
Vehicles again become the vehicle of choice to get around off the road.
So, here’s a quick review of safe ATV use - the North Kawartha Community
Policing Committee wants to reduce the frequency of ATV incidents.
For the most part ATV’s (motorized two, three and four-wheel recreational vehicles) are prohibited from being operated on public roadways - this means all highways, county roads and township roads. In North Kawartha, the only public road use for recreational ATV’s is on Highway 28 from the south Apsley entrance, north to the Hastings County line. And this means on the shoulder, at low speed, and in control. A licensed trapper or farmer can operate an ATV on the road, if (ALL the following):
For the rest of us, the closest we get is when we cross over the public roads, carefully, using the shortest possible route. Most of our ATV use is on private roadways, logging roads, fire routes, and forest trails – all types of terrain. Given that, a few safety tips:

If you have any questions, please call the Community Care Apsley office at 656-4589. “Big Smiles & Racing Through The Aisles at Sayers IGA“ Congratulations to Teresa MacIntosh, the final $500.00 IGA shopping spree winner in the Great Grocery Giveaway contest, drawn on April 1st. Apsley Public School News by Susan Matthews May 3rd Apsley Public School raised $1100.00 in pledges toward ‘Pedal for Hope’ the Pediatric Cancer Fundraiser put on by the regional police. The officers rode into the village and the students gave them a big Apsley welcome. Hopefully some of you had the opportunity to hear Mike Melnik on 980 AM the CRUZ talking with the officers about their successful visit to us. During the 1 ½ hr. visit the students were entertained by competitions, antics, head shaving (5 students braved the clippers and are now hairless) and a video outlining their cause and what they are doing to help find a cure for Cancer. The school has also been working through a series of events during Education week. They have enthusiastically participated in our dress up days, watermelon eating contest and the Pedal for Hope. There is a lot of SPIRIT here in our school! We have begun to let the people who drive by our school know of our FABULOUS staff and students as well as informing them about up coming events. We hope you have had the chance to see our sign and will join us for some of our special events. Graduation for our grade 8 class will be June 27th. We have 15 students that will be graduating and moving on to Lakefield Secondary or St. Peters Secondary school. We would like to wish them the best and hope that they stop in and say hello some time in the future. Staff at Apsley Public School are excited about celebrating the assistance of all of our volunteers. We have been excited to see parents, grandparents and interested villagers volunteer their time at the school. They have been reading with students, helping with bulletin boards, sorting information, helping students with their work, and assisting in the library. We will be hosting a Volunteer Tea on June 20th at 1pm in the Library. Invitations will be sent out prior to the 20th. The OPP have indicated that they are thinking of doing another Vulnerable Sector Screening in August and suggest that you take advantage of the short drive and get the paper work done early. We are hoping to have even more volunteers as we have some exciting times already prepared. In early September we will be going as a school to the International Ploughing Match and will be needing those extra hands to assist us. Please remember that Police checks are to be updated yearly. We would like to invite the community to celebrate the careers of our retiring staff. We will be having an informal evening of celebration on June 22, 2006 from 6:00 – 7:30 pm at the school. Anne Goble, Pat St.Laurent, Bob Barnes and Noreen Woods are all retiring this spring and we wish them well. We would like you to help us by showing your appreciation for each one of them by joining us at the school celebration. Have a safe and Happy Summer – See you in September.

Special focus on Canada Day, the 17'th Annual Flea Market (July 15) and the Mother's Day Brunch. Celebrate Canada Day 2006 On July 1st we will be celebrating our nation’s birthday. Please join in the fun! Apsley’s Community Parade will leave the school grounds at 4:00 PM. It will travel along Burleigh Street to Wellington (Cty Rd 504) and into the Lions Community Park. In the Park, there will be a brief opening ceremony and cake cutting, followed by games for the children, sponsored by the Lions and several local groups, delicious BBQ’d burgers or hot dogs prepared by the Apsley Lions, (this helps to finance the fireworks display), live entertainment all evening in the Community Centre hall, and the grand finale - a huge fireworks display at dusk. This annual event is sponsored by the Apsley Lions Club and the Beautification Committee for the community of North Kawartha.. We hope everyone will come out and enjoy this event. You can be a part of the parade or enjoy the festivities as a spectator. Chat with family and friends while the children play the games. Bring your baseballs and gloves and challenge your neighbours to a ball game at the ball diamond. It is a day to celebrate! Apsley Lions 17th Annual Flea Market – July 15th, 2006 Special thanks are extended to the community for their generous donations that have made the Flea Market a success for the past 16 years! In spite of the number of hours that are devoted to the gathering, cleaning, sorting and finally displaying the goods for sale, the Lions Club recognize this as a major fundraiser necessary for community projects and also a major re-cycling event! The Flea Market is the shopping event of the season! The many items featured at the Flea Market are household goods, toys, books, tools, plants, sporting goods and much, much more. Many of our local craftspeople also have display tables featuring gift items for any occasion. You can enjoy a delicious lunch on site at the Lions booth in the Park or at the Community Centre kitchen prepared by the Women’s Institute. Our special auction will begin at 11 AM and the silent auction will be in the main hall. Doors will be open from at 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM. For further information or to book vendor tables, contact Lion Fred at 656-3220 or Lion Joan at 656-3727. Don’t miss this great event at the Apsley Centre to support the North Kawartha Health Centre and other community projects. A must for our community.
