A.B.C. Seniors

by Dianne Langille

Welcome home to our snow bird members.  It is always encouraging to see an increase in attendance.

Our Euchre Tournament was a success.  Prizes were awarded to close.  The team of Steve and Marney Metrow was our 1st place winner, and Bet Pitts partnered with Ethel Tucker came in 2nd.  High single scores were Jean Leach with 74 pts, and Carol Hughes and Gabby Grimes tied with 63 pts.  The low score team received teddies with "what else" ABC on them.

Shannon Hunter and Alana Solomon from the Municipal came to speak of a new website which will promote awareness and information on our club activities.

Susan Matthews, Principal of Apsley Public School, one assistant and  4 delightful children visited on May 9th.  The children assisted the seniors by serving sandwiches and desserts.
By the end of June, the tickets for our quilt will be printed, and available for distribution to you.   Your participation is much appreciated.

Our annual  BBQ is coming up, June 27th.  As usual, it will be a nice day to end our meetings until after Labour Day.  Hope to see you there!!

Throughout July and Aug., members will still meet for Euchre from 1:00P.M. to 3:30 P.M.  Have a great summer.

What is Homeopathic Medicine?

by Lois Montgomery

Homeopathic medicines are derived from natural sources such as plants or mineral extracts, making them powerful, safe, effective and long lasting.  The principals of homeopathy have been a part of medical practice for centuries.  As discovered in the pyramids in Egypt and in ancient Greece the “Father of Medicine” Hippocrates wrote explicitly about Homeopathy and the law of similars.

The History of Homeopathy
Homeopathy was introduced to North America in the late 18th century where physicians unionized its principals with conventional medicines.  Unfortunately as the war and the great depression ended, people began to look for the magic bullet that would provide a quick fix.  As a result Homeopathy and its principals began to slip away.

Homeopathy Today
Today, Homeopathy has regained its footing in health and well being.  A person’s physical, emotional and mental symptoms are unique and are therefore treated respectively with perhaps a different medicine.   Homeopathic medicine believes that each symptom is an intelligent expression of a complex living system out of balance.  It is by listening and paying close attention to the totality of the symptoms that the homeopath can discover the best medicine for the patient.   Conventional medicine may treat the complaints with multiple drug therapy that could cause serious side effects over time.

The Apsley Bard

What Melting Snow Reveals

When spring comes and the snow retreats,
we find that we must labor
Pick up the duff of leaves and twigs,
the spade lent by the neighbor
Where we had thought when snow first fell,
that the yard was neat and clean
We find that winter’s cloak was used to hide a ‘Sanford Junkyard’ scene
The pruning pliers, a rake and shovel
we used to hill the roses
 The serpentine indentings
where we left the garden hoses
We curse ourselves for laziness
for not putting things in place
But when snow did fall,
we left it all ‘neath winter’s veil of grace.
We vow each spring,
as backs we bend to undo last Fall’s sin
We’ll be prepared to put each thing
in proper box and bin
By gosh, we swear this year I’ll care
and be ready for next spring
But in Fall we know,
there’s the rusty hoe,
Oh leave the blasted thing.
