Reports Senior Constable Brad Filman #5211 Media Relations Officer Peterborough County OPP 705-742-0401 brad.filman@jus.gov.on.ca BEAR BREAK AND ENTER - NORTH KAWARTHA TOWNSHIP At 11:26 P.M. a mother at home alone with her three young children was awaken by a noise in her enclosed front porch. Fearing someone was attempting to break into her house she went to investigate and found that a large black bear had somehow opened the door to the porch and was inside rummaging around. She called her mother who in turn called the police. By the time police arrived the bear had let itself back out of the porch by the same door and had wandered off into the bush. The bear left empty handed and caused no damage. Bear break and enters are common in the north part of Peterborough County at this time of year as the bears have come out of hibernation and are looking for food. Residents are reminded not to leave garbage in areas where bears have access. The Ontario Provincial Police want to remind motorists and passengers to buckle-up. Every year people die needlessly because they didn’t take the time to ensure they were properly secured. Seatbelts save lives … make it yours.

This is an 1100 kilometer bicycle tour over 7 days, through 4 Counties and to 53 area schools, raising funds for pediatric cancer research. Led by Const. Brad Filman, the officers connected well with the students – they high-fived their way into the gymnasium, participated with the students in Jell-O and ice cream eating contests, and kept up a steady stream of good-natured banter with the students. Through an excellent video, they explained their personal reasons for supporting pediatric cancer research, and explained the overall ‘Pedal for Hope’ program. Student Council President, Zachary MacDonald, made a donation of $300 on behalf of the school’s students, who had conducted ‘dress-funny’ and ‘hat day’ events over the School Spirit Week to raise money for this important cause. The students’ energetic and generous support was gratefully received by the Police Officers. Committee – 656-4431
