| A New Building for
Apsley Central Public School by Helen Osborne, Sandy Zimmerman, Janet McDougall On April 11th the Apsley Public School Renewal Committee (Sandy Zimmerman, Helen Osborne, Pat Hoffman, Carolyn Amyotte, Robin Miszuk, Sharon Hainer, and Heather Brooks- Hill) met with the Associate Director, Sherry Summersides, our trustee and Chair of the School Board, Diane Lloyd and Janet Mc Dougall, Principal. As well Joyce Hawthorne, Children’s Services for the City and County of Peterborough and Sheila Olan-MacLean, Kawartha Child Care Services attended. The good news we heard was that the school board has recommended that a new school be built in Apsley with a projected completion date of September, 2007. The intent would be to build on the current school site with the construction area fenced off. This would alleviate the need to disrupt students by moving them to an alternate location. Once completed the present school would be demolished. The Board is waiting for funding decisions from the Ministry of Education. The second part of the meeting focused on the possibility of adding a child care facility to the school through collaboration with Children’s Services. We are one of five projects earmarked for the City/County and presently Joyce Hawthorne is waiting for information from the federal /provincial governments regarding the funding for such projects. The needs assessment compiled by Kawartha Child Care Services indicated sufficient toddlers, preschoolers and before and after care for school age children to merit a facility in North Kawartha. Credit for the concept of child care facility must be given to a small sub-committee of the Community Interest Group - Sandy Zimmerman, June Hitchcox, Marian and Jim O’Shea. While the consultation group was meeting in 2004 over the issue of a possible school relocation/closing, this small group was researching and making the contacts with Children’s Services personnel. Next steps for the Apsley committee include reviewing a proposed design from Kawartha Child Care Services and attending a second meeting on May 18th at the Kawartha Pine Ridge School Board Office in Peterborough. If you want more details, don’t hesitate to talk to members of the committee. - - - - -

Apsley Lions Club by Joan Forsyth
Cleaned your closets yet? Or tackled the garage and sheds? Now is the time to recycle all those treasures that pile up and take up so much precious space. Why toss them in the dump? The Lions are very willing to pick up good, clean goods that can be re-cycled though their annual Flea Market on July 16th at the Apsley Community Centre. Our auctioneer, Wallace B. James, is trying to procure some antiques and collectibles to help increase the funds obtained at the special auction. He is looking for old fishing lures and tackle boxes, old toy s such as lead soldiers, game boards or matchbox cars, also old photos of the area or old tools used locally. We appreciate any help you can offer to raise the necessary funds for the Health Centre. For donation pick-up, please call Doug at 656-4744, Fred at 656-3220 or Harry at 656-9558. For vendor information, contact Joan at 656-3727 or Sally at 656-4547. We need your help! All proceeds from the Flea Market will be donated to the North Kawartha Health Centre Renovation Fund. The Lions Club is once again sponsoring the Canada Day Parade and Celebrations. We hope you will be a part of this great community event on July 1st. The Parade will start at 4:00 PM from the school. There will be lots of family fun in the Park. You can enjoy a BBQ, play a few games, have some birthday cake, enjoy the music and watch a grand display of fireworks. We hope to see everyone out to help celebrate Canada’s birthday. Five Easy Steps to Improve Water Quality
