Local History - N.H. Wilson

by Steve Metrow

N.H. Wilson Lumber was founded in 1952 by Norman H. Wilson. The building supply business grew as an offshoot of Norm's trucking company, which operated as Apsley -Peterborough Transport, when Norm began to sell lumber that he had sawn from his own logs to build his cottage.

In the early days of the company the lumber was purchased from local mills but as the number of cottages and homes being built increased, local mills could not keep up with the demand. Lumber from major North American mills was purchased through brokers and delivered to Lakefield by rail. Rail cars of lumber were unloaded by hand and trucked to Apsley by Norm's Transport trucks.

In 1971, Norm retired and Steve & Marney Metrow (Norm's daughter) took over the business. The business had been operated out of a small office in the Wilson home. When Steve and Marney took over they converted a 2-bay garage into a store and office. After 32 years of operating the business, Steve and Marney retired and Kim and Joyce Dunford purchased N.H. Wilson Building Supplies in May of 2003. Kim and Joyce's background make them an ideal team to run this company. Kim is a skilled carpenter who operated a successful contracting business here for over 25 years; Joyce's background includes a variety of positions from the administrative end of Kim's contracting business, to I.T. support at an international manufacturing company. Kim has deep roots as a business operator in our community; one of the first business establishments in town, Windsor's General Store was operated by Kim's maternal great grandfather Simon Windsor and was located where Sayer's I.G.A. now stands. Vern Windsor, Simon's son and Kim's maternal grandfather operated a Black Smith Shop where Watson's Gas Bar is located today. Kim's paternal grandfather Hilliard Dunford owned a number of businesses in Apsley - Dunford's Mill Inn which is now Miller's Timber Sands and Jacks Lake Tent and Trailer Park and Stephens and Mcdonald service station, which he sold to Newt Stephens and Ron Mcdonald. He also owned a saw mill operation located at the junction of 504 and Jacks Lake Road.

N.H. Wilson continues the long tradition of Apsley and area businesses by supplying quality goods and services to the area.

THE APSLEY BARD

Farewell Winter Welcome Spring
Last shards of ice have melted off the lakes
Another spring has arrived though late
The tree buds swell and promise hope
That leafy summer will eventuate
To relieve the winter, the need to cope.

In truth for we who stay midst the snow
The winter has its joys and pleasure
Day's crisp clean air and sun inspires
The inner soul while spirits treasure
The snow-draped trees, the glowing fires.

The townsfolk gather to dance and dine
The Legion, the Lions the Fireflies
Combine to help us contemplate
On how the town supports, supplies
Nights to gather, Feast-days celebrate.

So winter's passing is not relief
From winter's snows and long cold stay
It's gone and looking back we smile
That we had good times each white cold day
Enjoyed with sterner stuff, and gentle style.

Broadband in North Kawartha

by Shannon Hunter

The Township of North Kawartha is pleased to announce the availability of broadband Internet services for the community of Apsley, effective Monday, June 20, 2005. Broadband services will be provided by Nexicom Inc.of Millbrook, Ontario. This opportunity to provide broadband services to the residents and businesses of Apsley is part of a pilot project to bring affordable high-speed Internet services to smaller rural communities.

To enhance access to online government information and services, a Public Access Terminal will be located in Apsley Municipal offices for citizens who are without the means or time to travel to urban centres, or for those who are not connected to the Internet at home, or at work.

This project will provide affordable access to broadband connectivity for the benefit of local citizens and businesses. The goals of the pilot project are to provide:
· New opportunities to access government information, services, and programs;
· Stronger democracy via participation in online citizen engagement activities;
· Affordable access to high-speed Internet services for the community; and,
· Opportunities for local economic growth through modern telecommunications infrastructure.

The Township of North Kawartha partnered with the County of Peterborough to provide the infrastructure required to bring this service to Apsley. Integra Data Systems Corp. partnered with Nexicom Inc. to provide the necessary communications from Peterborough to Apsley.

As an outcome of this pilot, information gathered will contribute to future partnerships between government organizations and private sector to bring broadband services to other remote and rural Ontario communities.

Those registering for broadband service will be asked to complete a short survey describing their current and planned Internet usage as part of this information gathering activity.

“There’s a growing trend of providing municipal services via the web. We are excited to be able to provide the same services to our residents and provide broadband service for homes and businesses.” Jim Whelan, Reeve.

The County of Peterborough is pleased to be part of the solution for providing broadband services to the residents of Apsley. The pilot project will provide valuable information to the County relating to electronic delivery of government information and services, and in identifying and realizing business growth and development opportunities in rural areas.

On behalf of the County, Warden Neal Cathcart expressed that “the availability of high-speed is important to meet the needs of tourist operators, other businesses including home-based business and area residents”. He further stated, “the success of this project could lead to the expansion of services into other rural areas in the future”.

Residents and business owners in Apsley who would like to see broadband Internet access in action and register for service may do so by using the Community Access Program (CAP) computers at the Apsley Public Library during normal hours of operation, starting on Monday, June 20, 2005. In addition, those who would like to receive broadband service may register their interest by contacting Nexicom Inc. at support @nexicom.net or call 1-888-639-4266.
