Apsley School Update
Update by Pat Hoffinan, Lori Lawley, Helen
Osborne, Kim Tucker and Principal, Janet McDougall
On March 29, a public input meeting was held at Lakefield
District Secondary School, facilitated by Superintendent Sylvia Terpstra along
with committee members from Apsley, Buckhorn and Youngs Point areas. There
was an impressive turn-out of 300 people, of which 200 were from the Apsley
area... .thanks to all for the visible show of support. Superintendent Terpstra
commented that the negative effects of extended busing and lack of community
involvement were certainly issues concerning Apsley, if a consolidated school
were being considered in the Burleigh Falls area.
On April 6, our Municipal Council unanimously approved sending a letter to Minister of Education, Gerrard Kennedy, cc to Premier Dalton McGuinty, and our education officials at the Board office, endorsing a revision to the funding formula to assist rural schools and expressing the need for our school to remain in Apsley. On April 22, community committee members from the three schools involved in this .consultation process, attended a meeting of the Kawartha Pine Ridge School Board in Peterborough. We each presented the data and input from our respective communities to the Soard for their information and review. They received a strong message that Apsley Central P.S. should remain in Apsley. The Director and Superintendents will present recommendations to the Trustees in late September on the future of these 3 schools.

Earth Day — Apsley Central School
By Amanda Hickey, N.K. Junior Ambassador
Earth Day is a time to celebrate. We all breathe the same air. We all drink the same water and sadly we all pollute. If we work together we can find solutions and make changes to protect the Earth. At Apsley Central Public School we worked together, students of all ages, grades, and teachers to clean up our school yard. Each class was assigned a part of the yard to clean up. All classes worked extra hard to make the school property as clean as can be. Mrs. Jeff and her students spent even a little extra time. The whole class walked around the school grounds picking up sticks, leafs and garbage. Some climbed fences to get garbage that had been thrown over. At the end of the day students and teachers could be proud of a job well done. Every day should be Earth Day! Turn off un-used lights, walk to school or work, compost garbage or clean up trash from yards and streets. Together we can make a difference in our community. A New Place to Play
by Janet McDougall
Students arrived on Monday morning, May 10th,
to a wonderful sight in our back yard. Volunteers had been busy throughout
the weekend constructing a magnificent Shade Structure. It has been
in use by students non-stop all week.
What a wonderful place for children to play. Everyone
at Apsley Central would like to send a huge thanks to all of the people who
volunteered their time, skills, equipment and materials to make this Shade
Structure happen. |
