Apsley Easy Walkers:
Benefits From Walking

By Roy Allen

Did you know that persons over 65 who reported regular exercising prefer walking. About 35% walk, 7% do calisthenics, and the remaining exercises selected are below 6%. What power or mystique does walking hold; it's not complicated, it requires no expensive equipment for performance, and only requires your participation one hour each day. It is safe and effective.

Walking and other forms of exercise also have been shown in various studies to be particularily effective in curing or alleviating the afflictions most often associated with old age, such as brittle bones, eymphasema and other lung disorders, diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease. With all of these benefits we cannot afford not to participate.

About 2 1/2 years ago, a walking group, called the Apsley Easy Walkers, was formed in Apsley to support seniors who have had heart surgery, diabetes, and other medical problems. The intent was to make them feel healthier, look better, and to help them make new friends and socialize; everthing a healthy body and mind needs.

Participation is showing a great improvement in members' physical stamina, and motivation in other tasks and in the community. Members have expressed that walking has helped to alleviate their physical problems such as:
  • sleeping better, not as restless.
  • less tired when walking or working.
  • breathing easier, less shortness of breath.
  • weight control is easier.
  • feeling good, brighter outlook.
  • feeling younger.
  • patience, tolerance improved.
  • looking good.
It is important to exercise; you owe it to yourself and to your family. So start walking and enjoy the benefits of looking better and feeling better, just like the Apsley Walkers are experiencing.

Come join us, we walk three days a week and it's free. Call Gerald Watson at 656-3505 or Roy Allen at 656-1791 for furthur information. This program is supported by Community Care Apsley.

The Canadian Canoe Museum is home to more than 600 canoes and kayaks, the largest such collection in the world.

But it is much more than that. To visit its’ professionally designed exhibits is to step back in time to feel and understand how the canoe has shaped our history and our country. Artisans demonstrate and keep alive traditional skills in canoe building and paddle making; Interpreter Guides recount stories that bring the past alive; numerous A/V presentations throughout the exhibit hall entertain while educating.

The Museum has had its financial difficulties, but is on the road to recovery. It re-opened May 1st and will be open daily until October. Hours are 10:00 to 5:00 Monday to Saturday and 12:00 to 5:00 on Sunday.

Food Bank News and Needs

The North Kawartha Food Bank is here to assist people who food need help in putting food on their table.  It operates only through the work of volunteers and generous people like you.

The Food Bank is relocating to larger, much needed facilities in the present Community Policing building.  We are very grateful to Eileen and Ed Simpson  for donating their house-space during our stay at the present site.

This year, we are part of the Peterborough Fair Share Drive and some lucky soul will win a new car.  A local Food Bank director can sell you a $10.00 ticket, and you’ll see us live and large at the Canada Day Parade and the Lion’s Flea Market & Auction. Only 8000 tickets will be sold county-wide so you have a real chance to choose from a new Chrysler PT Cruiser or a Sebring or a Caravan.

Who benefits from the Food Bank?    Everyone.  First, members of YOUR community who are having hard times can supplement their food budget.  The rest of the community benefits by showing it will not tolerate hunger in its midst.   Being a cottager is also not a reason to stand back.   You need people to keep your property working and your leisure time enjoyable.  Many work for low pay for a short time.  They are YOUR fellow citizens too.  Need is the only qualification.

So, Help Us

Money and donations of nutritious food products are vital.  People also need the basic items like Root Vegetables, cooking oil, salt, pepper, sugar.  You can also donate toilet tissue, (try living without THAT!) and other sanitary products, soap, detergents, etc.

YOU are the Food Bank.  Volunteers are only tellers and clerks who put your generosity to work.

SO, HELP US.  Start by calling 705-656-1748
