Road Salt Spray and Your Shrubs
It looks like road salt is here to stay—apparently it is the least expensive way to keep our highways and byways safe for speedy winter driving. When we see what the salt spray is doing to our trees bordering those roads we begin to realize what the real cost is. dead and dying trees are everywhere. Evergreens are turning brown and becomng"nevergreens". Once proud hemlocks stand black and naked as a grim reminder of progress. I discovered some interesting information on the subject while thumbing through a recent copy of Harrowsmith Country Life and it is reproduced, in part for your information. There is hope after all because apparently vegetation is not all born equal and road salt spray does not have the same effect on all varieties of plant life. Salt-Sensitive Trees and Shrubs (Branches die back severely after prolonged exposure to salt. Eventually dies.) Hemlock, White Cedar, White Pine, American Beech, Hawthorn, Apple, Red-osier Dogwood, Highbush Cranberry, Beautybush Moderately Resistant Trees and Shrubs (Sustain considerable dieback with prolonged exposure to salt.) Norway Spruce, Silver Maple, Sugur Maple, Paper Birch, Black Willow, Forsythia, Weeping Willow, Mock Orange Salt-Hardy Trees and Shrubs: Blue Spruce, Austrian Pine, Norway Maple, Horse Chestnut, Honey Locust, Russian Olive, Red Oak, Sea Buckthorn, Staghorn Sumac, Burningbush, Lilac of course, the hardest hit is the vegetation closest to the highway, but airborne salt can reach up to half a mile from the road. Your best defense is to cultivate only those plants that have a natural tolerance to road salt. At least they’ll have a fighting chance.(Source: Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food & Rural Affairs)
People Are Like Potatoes
Some people never seem to be motivated to participate, but are content to watch others do. They are called “Speck Tators” Some people never do anything to help, but are gifted at finding fault with the way others do things. They are called “Comment Tators”. Some people are always looking to cause problems and are always getting under your skin. They are called “Aggie Tators”. There are those who always say that they will but somehow never get around to doing it. They are called “Hezzie Tators”. Some people put on a front and act like someone else. They are called “Emma Tators”. Then there are those who walk what they talk. They’re always prepared to stop what they’re doing to lend a hand to others and bring real sunshine into the lives of others. Call them “Sweet Tators”. |
