SCHOOL FUNDING
Janet McDougall

The Ministry of Education has recently provided KPR Board of Education with funding for improving school facilities.  Board personnel from Facility Services have already been out to Apsley to inspect the school site.  Further meetings with Beth Selby, Superintendent of Schools, Joe Hubbard, Superintendent of Administrative Services and Bob Allison, Superintendent of Business Services and Treasure and Janet McDougall, Principal, will be taking place over the next few weeks.   This is the first step in a long process involving input from a number of sources.  A variety of options are being actively investigated. Following careful consideration, recommendations will be sent to Board for final approval.

The Small School with A Huge Talent!
By Lori White and Tabitha Lowndes

On May 1st  many talented individuals got together to perform at the first Apsley School talent show. It was a night full of comedy, drama, instrumental music and many singers. Including our seventh inning stretch that involved singing along and doing hand actions. Due to our enthusiastic performers the audience seemed keen to join in the fun. We had a large turn out and raised over $175 for our playground

SCHOOL DAYS
Bill Johnston

I think like all kids recess was the big event of the
day in our lives and fighting was fairly common between the boys. I remember getting the strap for this once because the other lad’s nose was bleeding and it was a lady teacher on yard duty. Another time two of us had a fight directly in front of the principle's office. He immediately ordered us in to his office and said,” you know the penalty for fighting is the strap.” We held out our hands and took our punishment and were back outside in a matter of seconds as if nothing had happened. It made me feel that was a just man and I admired him.

Fighting was always considered good entertainment . It was such a big schoolyard it would take the teacher awhile to get there. The older kids watching would see that no one else would interfere. It was strictly one on one. If one were taking too much punishment they would stop it. There seemed to be a code we adhered to never would a weapon of any kind be used.

The highlight of our year was a ‘girlfight’. It would draw the largest crowd, as they were infrequent. The same rules applied except the boys would cheer both opponents on to prolong the fight,

I think the teachers were great. The core subjects, reading writing and arithmetic were pounded cajoled and coaxed into our heads. To me the public schooling we received was excellent and the teachers were firm but just and the education we received from them was to me the best that we could absorb.

This is my memories of school not necessary correct but it is as I recall them.
