Benefits From Walking
 Apsley Easy Walkers

by Roy Allen

Did you know that persons over 65 who reported regular exercising prefer walking?  About 35% walk, 7% do calisthenics, and the remaining exercises selected are below 6%.  What power or mystique does walking hold; it's not complicated, it requires no expensive equipment for performance, and only requires your participation one hour each day.  It is safe and effective.

Walking and other forms of exercise have been shown in various studies to be particularly effective in helping to alleviate the afflictions most commonly associated with old age, such as brittle bones, emphysema and other lung disorders. diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease.  With all of these benefit, we cannot afford not to participate.

Nearly six years ago, Gerald Watson and I started a walking group, called the Apsley Easy Walkers, a program to support seniors who have had heart surgery, diabetes, and other medical problems.  The intent was to help them feel healthier, look better, and to help them make new friends and socialize; everything a healthy body and mind needs.

Participation is showing a great improvement in members' physical stamina, and motivation in other tasks and in the community.  Members have expressed that walking has helped to alleviate their physical problems such as:
    -sleeping better, not as restless.
-less tired when walking or working
    -breathing easier
    -weight control is easier
    -feeling younger
    -patience, tolerance is improved
    -looking good

If you are interested in your health and on occasion helping other, then come join us on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 9.30 a.m. at the Community Centre.  It's free.  Telephone Gerald Watson at 656-3505 or Roy Allen at 656-1791 for further information.

The Apsley Easy Walkers is an independent group and not affiliated with any organization or any other group whether charitable, government supported, or business.

Up The Burleigh Road
…..beyond the boulders

An illustrated history of Burleigh and Anstruther Townships by the Burleigh Road Historical Society is being written by Doug and Mary Lavery and produced by Trent Valley Archives.  Up the Burleigh Road should be available for purchase on July 1st before the Canada Day parade outside of the Municipal office and after the parade, just look for the antique car on the Apsley Community Centre grounds.  If for some reason the book has not arrived it will be available at the Lions Flea Market.

The Burleigh Road Historical Society receives request for local historical information.  One such request was from a person in Colorado whose great grandfather was Dan Galbraithe.  He ran Ramona Lodge on Loon Lake (now Chandos) which he purchased from Arthur Hall in 1925.  He ran it very successfully until it burned down in 1936.  We welcome all inquiries and will try our best to answer.

YOUR HEALTH.......YOUR COMMUNITY!

by Cal Taillefer

First of all, I would like to thank all those who participated in the successful Garden/Home Tour that was held on June 24:  Gord & Barb Cummings, Leslie & Tim Hirasawa, Elizabeth Jackson, Mardy & John Mink, Sue & Paul Moffatt, and Lucy Perna for opening up their homes/gardens; Jack Lake Landscaping for their $100 gift certificate; Apsley Garden & Cottage Shoppe for their $25 gift certificates; all those who graciously sponsored our event and, of course, those who attended; and last but not least, our organization committee of Jeannie Crowe, Donna Krug, Patty Gregg, Caroline Elder, and all of their helpers.  Not only was the event fun and interesting, it helps to bring us closer to our goal of $350,000 (at this point, we only need $75,000 more…very do-able!)

Thanks to all for dropping their change into the jars at IGA and Guardian Pharmacy and to those wonderful beer drinkers who donate their bottles to us at Watson's…our goal is in sight!  If you have not taken the opportunity to support this campaign, please do it now and also encourage others to participate, also.  Forms are available at the Township Office, IGA, or from Jeannie Crowe.  WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Please keep the date of August 27 free for our wind-up "Thank-you/Fundraiser" Garden Party to be held at the Medical Centre. Thank you all for your generosity.

Glen Alda Seniors collected $300. to help buy chairs for the Health Centre.
