St George’s Anglican Church - Apsley

St. George’s was established 130 years ago.  From a very humble beginning the actual building has gone through several make-overs.  The original church was barely four walls covered with a thick brown paper that shook and broke loose with the wind.  The building has been enlarged, a basement and a modes kitchen added and the walls are I no danger of blowing away.

The various church leaders and the congregation over the many years have mirrored the history and the growth of Apsley and the surrounding community.

The first lay reader, Canon Harding, is still remembered with a large memorial in the cemetery in the church grounds.  Rosalie McColl, a member of the congregation for 87 years was appointed first lady Warden of St. George’s in 1978.  Mary Ellen Wilson has been the organist for over 40 years.  There have been many notable leaders and congregation members over the last 130 years, but the length of this article doesn’t allow for their mention.

The Reverend Peter Bishop, current Priest-in-charge, remarked that the Church was much more than the building.  Previously, Bishop Lewis Gainsworthy mentioned that everyone was involved in the ministry of the Church by the witness of their words and lives, not just the clergy.  This would seem evident in reviewing of the history of St., George’s in Apsley.

Trinity United Church
Service at 11.30 am.
Sunday June 5th was the 140'th anniversary of Trinity United Church. Many people have attended services and many other functions during those years. Sadly there is no Sunday School at present but we have maintained a Vacation Bible School which is very popular. Our outdoor service which is on Sept. 11th is also a favourite. For many years Trinity has held their annual dinner. This is a well attended event. Due to the great dedication of both ministers and members of the Board and congregation, Trinity is still going strong after the first people met together 140 years ago.

The Apsley Bard

Folks of Quality

The great thing about poetry
Is to puncture life’s pomposity
There’s people scram from the big city
Then try to bring urbanity
Prefer sophisticated repartee
Give well to stylish charity
They’d be the Folks of Quality

There’s others one calls polyglot-tle
Who drink beer from the can or bottle
Who’ll help you with a fallen tree
And baby sit your dog for free
Won’t reach the social apogee
Do not possess the family tree
Of the nobler Folks of Quality

Some wear the air of upper crust
Their faces show suppress-ed lust
The joys of life for them expired
Their erotic fuel no longer fired
They lack libido’s imagery
Conceal their joys so anally
Those wrapped-tight Folks of Quality

The best of both is here to take
Residing by a laid-back lake
Where there’s informal fun to taste
With fish to catch and time to waste
More classy types we’d seem if we
Tried classing up with La-Da-Di
Drink Chardonnay from crystal clear
But reg’lar folk prefer cold beer.

So if you seek a quieter life
Don’t add to yours and others’ strife
With city style and high-faluting
No Burger Kings and drive-by shooting
No traffic jams, road rage or guile
You meet your neighbor with a smile
And they in turn smile back you see
They’re real Folks of Quality
