Government
Waste
by Neil Sperling It amazes me how much of the tax payers dollars are wasted bashing about ideas like same sex marriages. Less than 2% of the married population would ever be of the same sex, even if they made it legal for the same sex to marry coast to coast. Why bother debating something that will never make "everyone" happy no matter what the outcome? Leaders should start spending Parliamentary time and OUR money on issues that the MAJORITY benefit from. They should be finding ways to reduce our taxes as well as finding ways to make Government both accountable and efficient. Get rid of time and money wasting issues and programs that benefit so few people. The majority pay taxes, yet only the squeaky wheels of the minority groups get the attention and the handouts. No wonder so many people see taking the time to follow politics and to vote, as futile. Our Government is a waste of time! Docktalk Protects Lake Environments by Rachel O’Shea, Chandos Lake Docktalk Coordinator The cottagers of Chandos Lake have been given an important environmental opportunity! The Federation of Ontario Cottagers’ Association is helping the Chandos Lake Association deliver a lakefront owners’ education program called Docktalk. This is an exciting chance to gain valuable practical knowledge on how to care for shoreline properties. Docktalk will deliver important up-to-date information to 100 Chandos Lake cottagers through personal site visits by trained Docktalk staff. Some of the information provided by the Docktalk staff will include: controlling invasive species, pollution prevention, and shoreline erosion management. As Docktalk Coordinator, a part of the program that I am very excited about, and looking forward to, is the rehabilitation of three Chandos Lake islands: Bald Island, Chandos Lake Narrows Island and Buck Island. Staff members and Chandos community volunteers will spend several days throughout the summer cleaning up garbage and planting seedlings around the islands. This will enhance the sites for loon nesting and help prevent the sparse and precious soils from disappearing into the lake. Buck Island will be a special focus. It has suffered a serious loss of tree cover; therefore, particular effort will be taken to ensure that the natural habitat is restored. The replanting of this island is expected to take at least three years and ongoing care will needed. Already, the process has begun. King Baker, the Chandos Lake Steward, and myself, have begun documenting each island’s natural vegetation in preparation for the rehabilitation projects. The Ontario Trillium Foundation and Bancroft Stewardship Council are funding the Chandos Lake Docktalk program. |
