Baltimore Orioles (Northern - not the A.L. East variety) Hummingbird feeders are a familiar sight but did you know that Orioles also have a sweet-tooth for sugar water? Someone phoned about the very peculiar behaviour of an Oriole because it seemed to be attacking a ( perchless) Hummingbird feeder. Actually, the trouble was, it had no place to land! Stores sell proper Orioles feeders with adequate perches. As with Hummers, the mix is 4 parts water to 1 part sugar (no colouring) - bring to a boil - cool and pour into a very clean feeder. Besides flower nectar and sugar water, Orioles eat fruits, berries, nutmeats, suet and love grape jelly! They feed themselves and their young great quantities of destructive insects, relishing such things as Tent Caterpillars. Baltimore Orioles are a subspecies of the Northern Oriole so can be found under either name in bird books. The male Baltimore is a beautiful, brilliant orange-and-black bird, female duller - slightly smaller than a Robin. The male's song is a clear, flute-like whistle, often delivered from the highest treetop. Perhaps you have seen an Oriole nest - particularly after the leaves have fallen. It looks like a hanging "bag", usually 25' to 60' up in a deciduous tree attached to a fragile outermost branch. The female, sometimes upside down, weaves the 6"deep nest of grass, hair, plant fibres and twine making a perfect cradle for the young as they sway in the breezes. |
