North Kawartha Council News and a Gas Rant
by Jim Whelan New Municipal Building Council discussed the cost and other factors with respect to accommodating the library into the lower level of the new municipal building. Councilor, Barry Rand felt that it would be practical and relatively inexpensive to build it at a cost of about $ 50 per square foot. Deputy Reeve, Warren Smith stated that he disagreed with the idea and it would add another $ 180,000 to the cost of the building. Councilor, Carolyn Amyotte, wanted to see if there was some way of making use of the existing library and the surrounding buildings. On a recorded vote, Councillor Rand voted against moving ahead without the inclusion of the library. All other council members voted for proceeding with tendering for the design and building of the new municipal office. Hockey School Councilor-at-large, Arnie Brown, stated that he would like to operate another hockey school during the Christmas break. Last year’s school was very successful, and it is expected that enrolment will be significant this year. More details will be announced in the fall. County Report Reeve, Jim Whelan, reported that there was an emergency meeting to discuss the dispatching of fire crews in the county. Two townships lost their ability to dispatch and two others lost their ability to page. North Kawartha, and the remaining three townships were not affected in any way but the county discussed the possibility of providing the service to all of the townships. The cost would be more than North Kawartha is paying now so it is unlikely that anything will change. COMRIF Funding After some discussion, council decided to defer the decision to apply for government funding. Most of the first round of funding was awarded to townships wanting to repair bridges. North Kawartha’s request for funding to maintain Anstruther Lake Road was turned down. For the second round of applications, the only road meeting the requirements is Anstruther Lake Road, but the existence of the park, and any possible upgrades to the road by the MNR, complicate the matter. Council Summer Meeting Schedule Council will meet on July 12 at 9:30 am and on August 16 at 9:30 am. Visit www.northkawartha.on.ca to view the approved minutes for all Council meetings. |
What do you
mean Gas is Expensive? by Eyam Tory Take a look at the price for premium gasoline in European countries, then compare to the small price we pay. Prices as of March 21, 2005 France - $1.77 Germany - $183 Belgium - $1.82 Italy - $1.89 United Kingdom - $1.90 Netherlands - $2.05 (all prices are in Canadian dollars per litre) In the year 2000 when a litre of regular gas cost 71.4 cents, the break down by cents per litre was Tax 30.2, Operating Margin 4.8, Refiner Margin 8.5, & Crude Cost 27.9. At the end of 2004 based upon a 81.3 cents per litre, the break down was Tax 32.5, Operating Margin 4.0, Refiner Margin 13.8, & Crude Cost 31.0. It is obvious to us all that a large portion of the overall cost of gas is the tax man (or person), and as a good Canadian I don’t mind paying an abnormal amount of taxes. “Now for the Rant” But is this tax not suppose to be earmarked for infrastructure. We have seen our roads and bridges fall apart over the past couple of decades with no money from the Feds. It takes staying in power for the Liars in Ottawa to cough up some coin for long overdue repairs, unless you don’t have transit and then you just don’t get any. They would rather put OUR money into foundations that are out of the reach of the auditor general then repair this country. Now remember, Rome use to have roads through all of its empire until Greed took them down, and then the dark ages hit, hey makes me nervous just thinking about it. Leviticus 11:10 And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you: 11:11 They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat their flesh, but ye shall have their carcasses in abomination. 11:12 Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you. Leviticus 11:10-12 Clams, oysters, crabs, lobsters, and shrimp are abominations – it seems God has allergies. |
